A kids club could be without a home in the coming months.

Last month we revealed that Southend Council was looking to bulldoze Leigh Connexions Centre in Elm Road in the next 12 months in a cost-cutting measure.

Plans to scrap the centre have been mooted for some time but members of the Southend Junior Phab club, which meets at the centre every Wednesday, were shocked to read that the building could be demolished far sooner than they expected.

The club is for children disabled youngsters between the ages of seven to 16, bringing youngsters together to do arts, crafts, cooking, and music.

Group leader Jenny Drewer said: “For a lot of the kids it is the only club that they attend and for a lot of them it is the first time they have been away from home at a club like this.

“We’re quite a unique club in what we do.”

Southend Council’s group manager for asset management, Alan Richards said: “ It is true to say that this centre is not well used. “We have worked with Leigh Town Council to make sure that plans are put in place for the clubs which use the youth centre to be able to use space in Leigh Community Centre in due course.

“This means that if a decision is taken to demolish the youth centre, this would not be the end of the valuable clubs which use it.

“The Phab club was invited to, and well represented at the public consultation events.
