90 GPs support Echo campaign

First published in Echo News

DOZENS of doctors have followed the lead of their hospital colleagues and published an open letter against changes to pathology services.

Ninety South Essex GPs have signed a letter to be sent to each of the four local Clinical Commissioning Groups and the Department for Health against the move of pathology services to Bedford.

The GPs write in support of the 119 Southend Hospital consultants who wrote to the Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt last week and ask for a pause in the process for more consultation.

The doctors are from practices across south east Essex including Rochford, Westcliff, Great Wakering, Rayleigh, Leigh, Benfleet, Southend, Hullbridge, Hockley and Canvey.

They wrote: “We join them (the hospital consultants) with the same concerns regarding lack of sufficient local consultation and risk to patient safety.

“In addition, we believe that assertions attempting to give reassurance that there will be no change in service for "routine" blood tests are based on a false assumption.

“It is only possible to identify a blood test as routine in retrospect, once the result is known to be normal."

Do you still think the objections to moving our local blood testing is some kind of conspiracy by left wing extremists and union reps Gentlegiant?

I have been told that to get the best results from a blood test it needs to be tested asap, so transporting it to Bedfordshire could mean not get a correct or accurate result. We are all happy with how it is done at the moment thank you.

The local CGC should examine their conscience and decide rightly that as in other examples cost cutting kills as shown at Stafford Hospital. Local residents health should not be compromised for the sake of money. It works as it is and the area should not be under duress to change it. Lose this service and others will follow. Already the health service is fragmented as anyone who has to go for a test of one sort or another to find it is at places other than the hospital. Hospitals were set up to house all services in one place.

Over 200 Consultants and GP's cannot all be wrong. Has anyone looked into whether there is any connection, however remote, between those pushing so hard for this move and the company who would be contracted to carryout this work? Perhaps this is something the Echo could do on behalf of all of its concerned readers.
