Private pathology firm not fully accredited

THE PRIVATE firm who run Bedford Hospital’s laboratories are not fully accredited by the appropriate professional body, the Echo can reveal.

Our campaign against the move of pathology services from Basildon and Southend to Bedford Hospital has been widely supported by the local community.

Routine blood and other specimen samples will travel 88 miles to Bedford by road for screening raising concerns about delays in getting products there and then results back to GPs and patients.

GSTS Pathology at Bedford Hospital are awaiting accreditation with the Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) for cellular pathology and haematology.

John Gibson, founder of the Asset Trust which has funded millions of pounds of equipment at Southend Hospital who is fully supporting the campaign, said: “The significant of this is huge. The authorities are already so far down the line with this move they are clearly quite prepared to accept them to do this service on our behalf yet they are not accredited. Its worrying they are not certified by the professional body.”

A spokesman at Bedford Hospital said: “Bedford Hospital NHS Trust currently has temporary pathologists in place and we are working on a permanent solution to support the accreditation of those services.”

Perhaps the hospital could save even more money by using porters to service the boilers and using cleaners to take x-rays.

Appalling. How can a contract be awarded to a provider who is not accredited?
On the same day as the Staffordshire report has found too much emphasis was placed on cost cutting rather than patient care- this stinks of the same.

You just could not make it up - what is it with the people with whom we trust our health.
This needs to be looked at closer - who are the names involved, are their any names which have an interest directly or indirectly.
the NHS is a disgrace at the moment and no-one actually cares so long as it is privatised and someone elses problem. This is long arm management at its very worst. there would be no accountability or so they think because if this is signed off then our local CGC has its head onthe block - as does the Tory govt.

The incompetent/s that chose to put local peoples health at risk by choosing to send local blood testing to an uncredited laboratory should be sacked immediately for gross misconduct as the person/s responsible for making this decision are putting peoples lives at risk

What next are they going to award a contract for neurosurgery to a medical student who might pass their finals Absolute idiots
