Entry to housing waiting lists to be cut in half in Southend
2:00pm Wednesday 6th February 2013 in Echo News
Housing waiting lists could be cut
WAITING lists for Southend’s council homes could be slashed in half following a radical shake-up.
Bosses at Southend Council have drawn up a dramatic plan to overhaul the system which governs who does and who doesn’t qualify for subsidised housing in the town.
The changes, if approved by councillors, would prioritise applicants who have a lengthy connection to Southend, served in the armed forces or have paid jobs.
At the other end of the scale, those people deemed too wealthy, too disruptive or simply too picky could be barred from even registering an interest.
Daniel Baker, the council’s group manager of strategy and planning for housing, said the move could cut the number of applications for council homes by up to 60 per cent.
He added: “The Localism Act has given the council greater freedom to decide who does or does not qualify for entry onto the homeseekers’ register.
“The exclusion from the homeseekers’ register of those with no housing need and little chance of re-housing will help to free up resources to concentrate on those who are in greater housing need.”

I recently submitted a freedom of information request to Southend Council enquiring how many non British citizens were currently on their housing register and how many, over the last 4 years, had been housed. They replied that they didn't know but could give me a breakdown of the ethnicity of their tenants and those seeking to be housed.
My reply to that was 'Rubbish' as question 1 on the housing application form clearly asks 'Are you a British citizen'? I also pointed out that ethnicity doesn't equate to nationality. They replied that the information was requested but not collated.
I gave up and logged their reply as failure to satisfactorily deal with an FOI request.
Point of this?
Local housing should go to local people not economic migrants - whatever their ethnicity.

And this then, represents 60% of the applicants?
"Too picky" means what? if you're not satisfied with an old pig shed on a pig farm, you would not be allowed on the list?
Sounds to me that Mr. Big (Mr. Baker) might be somewhat "Too Picky" himself!

Their response proves even more and without a shadow of a doubt that they really do not have the people who elected them in best interests at heart.
.
Southend Council fails the boroughs residents again, and again, and again, and again, and again,(repeat until infinity and beyond!)
