Millions to be ploughed into Basildon's council homes

MORE than £100million will be ploughed into  Basildon's council homes over the next four years, it was announced this morning.

The cash will be spent on improving existing homes, investing in communal heating systems, sprucing up the borough's council estates, carrying out repairs and building affordable homes.

Do what London has started to do. Knock them down and build better quality homes. Why plough £100m into 60s blocks?

there has been a lot of that sort of action going on in the area for over fifteen years now. The old 'Siporex' estate in Laindon and parts of the Five Links estate for example as well as the recent redevelpoment of Royal Court, also in Laindon.

They have begun to implement this strategy in Craylands but so far have only demolished a few properties while trying to get the residents of those remaining in the area in question to vacate.

I agree with you that the demolition and rebuilding of old, energy inefficient units and the building of modern houses is the way to go.

The standards of the build in some of these 1960's and 70's housing estates fall far below what would be acceptable these days and it is often the case of them becoming 'money pits' that would benefit from total rebuilding

They have begun to implement this strategy in Craylands but so far have only demolished a few properties while trying to get the residents of those remaining in the area in question to vacate.
It sounds like negotiations are taking place! Why? It's council taxpayers property and if they need to leave they should go. If they want choices they can rent/buy privately.

I would hazard a guess, looking at the houses where there are still a few people living among rows of boarded up and waiting to be demolished properties that they are 'right to buy' owner occupiers

Right to buy follows the tenure of when you started renting, not on the current time at any particular house.

surely the best way to improve these areas is to get tenants who respect the premises they are given, rather than tthose who treat a house as a "gimmee". Have you seen the areas being targted? Full of feral scum, living off benefits, smoking 40 a day and expecting those of us that do pay taxes to put them in nice houses and pay for their habits

Basildon council among many others is having to implement the new government edict which requires tenants who are under occupying council houses and who are on benefits to forfeit a percentage of this benefit as a punishment for not seeking smaller accomodation. However I understand that smaller housing is in short supply, so why has Basildon council allowed developers to board up so many houses on Craylands which could be put to good use housing needy families.Basildon council get your finger out and make the developers open up these properties until they need to be demolished , which I believe will not be anytime in the near future looking at their progress building new properties

You all seem to know a lot about us grasping cave dwellers on Craylands , why don't you become councillors and do something about it ? after all you talk as though we are all on benefits , some of us have worked for 50 odd years and paid our dues how dare you catagorise us as feral scum living off benefits. Well Cosmo Spring harder times are coming lets see how you make out without holding your hand out for help.

They cant do that now...the land they had planned for that was fought over and kinda let the cat out of the bag..
