Make it tougher for burglars, say police
RESIDENTS are being urged to lock up or lose out to burglars as part of a new campaign designed to cut the number of break-ins.
Basildon is one of three hotspot areas - including Epping Forest and Harlow - which is being targeted by the joint Essex Police and Essex County Council campaign due to a rise in the number of break-ins.
Between January and March last year, there were 304 burglaries across the borough, an average of more than 100 per month.
Now, through the Safer Essex partnership, police have teamed up with Essex County Council to run the joint advertising campaign, urging people to think twice before leaving homes unlocked and valuables on display.
A massive advertising van has been placed in Basildon’s Town Square with the slogan “remember lock doors and windows before I leave the house” and posters are also being given out to residents and displayed on buses urging people to take simple steps such as locking doors and windows.

Can I suggest a couple of things that may see quite quite radical?
Firstly, how about the police actually do their job and actively hunt down the burglars. It should not be too hard, all these burglaries are bound to be commited by the same person/group of people.
Secondly, how about judges passing down maximum sentences, even for first time burglars.

The judicial system in this country is a sham, but sadly cost in £'s overides even the judicial system and laws.

It has to be said that the comments the Police being more proactive it true . The Public can only do so much but when they become victims the Police launch campaigns like this well I notice under the figures for burglary are not shown the figures for arrests for burglaries, a bit one sided dont u think ? Plus how many times do you see the local Police sat in groups drinking coffee in the local BP garages at night ? I hardly call that pro active anti burglary policing to support their campaigns !

They couldnt comment as they couldnt decide if it was legal or not. So much for asking for advice.

Devils Advocate wrote:Agree entirely. Its about time police were allowed to dish out a bit of justice because in most cases they know who are committing the crimes but our justice system is so laughable that it ties police's hands and protects criminals.
So now the Police can't stop for a cup of tea? Seems a bit unfair when you think how many people there are who sit in their office with their computers running "solitaire" or busy tapping away a letter to the Echo, with the coffee machine sitting ready to top them up at a second's notice, and, unlike those dreadful men who do a job the public hate them for,not once thinking about how it will feel when the "Released into the community druggie" inserts his "blade" into their ribs, and whilst they ponder this, they grieve a little at the way their pensions are being hacked to pieces and they worry about why they have to be on their own when they stop a car with four burly "notmyfaults" in it, looking for someone to beat up. Then, if they do arrest someone, they spend the next three weeks writing up the case, miss the fact that they left one "I" un-dotted and the "Can't prosecute service" chuck the case out, and the poor PC gets yet another black mark placed permanently on his record, and you bemoan the fact that they stop for a break? Tell me, is your real name Cameron?

notinwestcliffanymorBut don't have a sign up advertising the fact. If a said sign advertises 'beware of the dog' and the burglar gets bitten, apparently its the house holders problem as they have advertised that they are aware that the dog is dangerous. Should it say ' dogs loose', then more fool the intruder.
