A TRENDY new seafront cafe designed to look like a windbreaker is taking shape on Westcliff seafront.

Married couple David and Heather Gammer are behind the venture which will bring bistro style food and seaside goods to the beach.

The Beach Hut is on course to open by the end of March ready for the Easter bank holiday.

Mrs Gammer, from Chalkwell, said they intend to apply for a licence to sell alcohol and hope to open on summer evenings for customers to enjoy the balcony seating area through to dusk.

She said: “We hope to help bring this side of the seafront into the 21st Century. The previous building was dilapidated and we have quite an exciting modern design.

“Our terrace overlooking the beach is taking shape nicely. “People have been quite enthusiastic about our project.”

The building, opposite Toulouse restaurant, replaces a dilapidated cabin style hut which sold seaside items like buckets and spades.

Work started at the end of September.

The Beach Hut will have a small area to continue sales like this to remain true to its seaside location.

It has been designed by SK Architects in Leigh who came up with the coloured windbreak design.

Mrs Gammer added: “We want to retain the traditional beach outlet selling some beach goods as that’s what people come to the beack for. We will be serving a modern and fresh menu and offer a place for people to chill out and sit and enjoy the views.”

It will serve breakfast, lunch and teas and evening meals if there is the demand during summer months. There is room for 40 to 60 customers.

The menu will include fish tacos, sandwiches and wraps, homemade burgers and platters.

A good quality casual eating place.Good move, time the few old places got rebuilt and moved with the times, move away from weak cheap tea, donuts cooked in old oil, and cheap frozen burgers with a permanent waft of fried food items filling the air with-in a 4 metre radius , will pop in when its open,

Could not agree more. Good luck to them both. Just a quick pointer, make sure the deep fat fryers are cleaned more often than some of the items I've seen and cleaned at nearby venues - no names - .......

I'm sure the owners of Toulouse will be delighted to have their view blocked and a similar bistro type menu during the daytime just across the road from them.

The old one had become an eyesore, new owners had improved it a lot and now with this complete transformation it's going to really enhance the area with the smart looking Toulouse opposite. Nice to see people still prepared to invest.

There was a place in the same position before, one place looks like it will be more casual than the other, so will cater for just slightly different people i would think, but the beach side position has a 1 up.

A Cafe was always there before , so don't see why this should be an issue. Competition is never a bad thing for the consumer, further more from what I have heard it will be much more relaxed bar/bistro . Just with a nice balcony over the water. No harm in people just wanting to provide best food they can with a good atmosphere like the ocean beach for Leigh

I've just stumbled across The Beach Hut website. It looks like they have put a lot of thought into it. I'm really looking forward to the opening day! Good luck to them.

looks ok to me wish the owners well. there permanant not like the caterers who come in fleece the public airshow time good riddance to the airshow what about a music arts bank holiday week streching from southend to leigh lets be proud of this once nice area

I do my my own sau and burgers in the oven in the morning,if I am going down seafront or pier,I will not pay over 4 pounds for a burger,and also take my own donuts, I will pay for a cup of tea though, So long as its not weak..me and my mum went along the sea front we had sau and chips this was last year, the sau was slightly burnt and it didn't even taste like a sau, I am not a fussy person,But I will not pay there prices and also the food was awfull.

Maybe someone left the sage out. Makes all the difference to the taste!
