Not being funny but I could see this coming for ages. I am surprised they have lasted so long, especially in the face of "on Demand" services.

Any shop/business that sells products that does not need to been seen physically is going to struggle in an online world. People know what DVDs/Cds etc etc that they want and unfortunately these shops cannot compete with the savings available on line. Its a huge shame as these are the shops I remember so well as a teenager spending my pocket/paperround money on. I fear theres alot more closures to come in our highstreets.

Additionally people do not have as much, if any disposable income to spend on these products and this is also contributing to the downfall.

We need to get digital media into public libraries - available for free - as a matter of haste. It would attract people into town centres* and cost almost nothing. I'd also like to see a new one-shot commercial licence made available (perhaps from libraries) to make it easier for enterprises to try out '+movie' bundles.

I see no reason why any digital content older than a typical 'theatre preview' window or performing tour should not be made available in the same way books always were.

I feel sad for those people who are going to have to find new employment, but technological change has always had this effect.

*'Free' encourages waste - asking people to walk past town centre shops to fetch their digital content is a kind of 'cost'.

bit awkward... the rayleigh blockbuster told my brother he could have an application form when he was 18 years old the other day...

where's the Pitsea one these days?

Last time I looked the unit where it used to be is, ironically, a funeral director now and has been for years

This was coming, who these days, with 'On Demand' viewing, goes out to rent a DVD? With a set top box you can watch what you want, when you want, without even leaving your sofa.

I'll be glad to see the one in Rayleigh gone, hideous shop front, bad for the town's reputation, as for the people going there and double parking, byesee bye...
