Dumped dogs looking for new homes

Dolly Dolly

HUNDREDS of dogs were left homeless over Christmas after they were dumped and abandoned in freezing temperatures.

Acres Way Kennels in Great Burches Road, Thundersley, is just one of the rescue centres that has seen an influx of dogs needing new homes. There are currently 40 strays at the kennels all with their own heartbreaking tales.

Wagging tails and friendly faces hide the often shocking neglect these animals have escaped.

Tom Millson, who runs Acres Way Kennels, said this time of year was always busy.
He said: “It is pretty full at the moment. Usually just before Christmas and a couple of months after the numbers go up.

“There are a lot of very good dogs. They are all temperament tested before they go out. A lot of them are brilliant dogs, they just need a decent home to go into.“

Mr Millson said a rescue dog has a lot to offer a new owner.

He added: “A dog that is a few years old is a lot easier to live with, older dogs are a little bit easier going.”

DOLLY
Lurcher
Between six and eight years old
Lovely temperament, not good with small animals

WHEN Dolly was found she was half-dead wandering in the Benfleet area.
A member of the public brought her to the kennels and she was in a terrible condition - full of fleas and worms and totally emaciated.
Since being at Acres Way, she has started to put on weight and is now ready to home.

LOLA
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Four to five months old
Energetic, suitable for a young family

LITTLE Lola was picked up as a stray by the dog warden on Canvey.
She spent Christmas at the kennels and is now ready for anything.
The puppy is friendly with other dogs.

SCRUFF
Jack Russell
Five years old
Loving but nervous when meeting new people

NERVOUS Scruff was found in Basildon in bad shape.
He was infested with fleas and filthy dirty.
Scruff has now put on some weight and needs somewhere calm to live.

CASSIE
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Two years old
Nervous but friendly

SHY Cassie was found in Laindon and had to undergo emergency surgery after she had pups.
She is now recovering well and needs a home with children over five years old.
Cassie needs some more training but will make a lovely pet.

REGGIE
Mastiff
Two years old
Playful and friendly

MASTIFF Reggie is one of the kennels’ longest residents.
He has proved difficult to rehome because of his size which means he has spent nearly three months at Acres Way.
He is friendly but will need an owner who is used to bigger dogs.
