Southend councillors: surgeries will continue
4:00pm Wednesday 2nd January 2013 in Echo News
COUNCILLORS have promised to continue holding regular surgeries - regardless of how many residents show up.
Last month, Julian Ware-Lane, a Southend Labour councillor, cancelled his monthly drop-in session at Trinity Methodist Church, in Westcliff, because nobody had attended in seven months.
But fellow politicians said their surgeries were a vital link to the community.
Ted Lewin, a Liberal Democrat councillor for St Laurence ward, holds a session on the last Saturday of every month at the west area housing office in Mendip Crescent.
He said: “Most people do tend to communicate via email or the phone, but I will continue to hold the surgeries because they are used.
“They offer people a chance to come and talk to me face to face.”
Mr Lewin was backed by his Lib Dem colleagues in Prittlewell and Westborough, who host a monthly surgery at various locations.
The next meeting will be at St Peter’s church, in Eastbourne Grove, Westcliff, from 10am on Saturday. James Courtenay, a Tory councillor for Blenheim Park, also hosts a meeting at the housing office in Mendip Crescent on the first Saturday of every month.
He said: “I won’t pretend there are always a lot of people there, but there is a steady number who come to see me with problems.”

A few facts:
1. When elected in May 2011 I pledged to hold a monthly in-ward surgery. Unlike some of my council colleagues I didn't (and won't) give them up after a few months of being elected.
2. Expenses claimed for surgeries: £0.00
3. Expenses claimed since being elected: £32 - Travel card to London to represent the council (before you ask: No booze, no food was provided or consumed, it was a Munroe report briefing session).
4. Expenses claimed since joining the Cabinet: £0.00.
5. Not all your Blenheim Park councillors can afford to live in St James' Gardens. I certainly do not live in Thorpe Bay. I live in Southchurch, having lived in Chalkwell for c.25years before that. I do hope to be moving back towards Blenheim this year.
6.Yes I am 'pro airport' although if you had seen me at the last meeting we had holding the airport to account you'd be forgiven for thinking I wasn't! All 3 parties were pro airport when I stood for election. I just didn't hide it. It was and still is an important issue for the residents of Blenheim, so I made it clear what my views were BEFORE asking for their vote.
7. I'm part of the Cabinet - I don't follow the local party, I'm part of the body that makes the decisions! This is the first time Blenheim Park has had someone in this position representing it . so instead of moaning that I vote for my own decisions, come along to my surgery - 10:30 on Saturday at the Mendip Crescent West Area Housing Office, where I can tell you all about what I've been doing FOR YOU AND THE WARD. You can also tell me what issues you have and I'll do my best to help. The fact I don't put people's personal problems (housing, financial, schools etc) on the front page of my literature is to respect people's privacy.
I'm pleased you will be able to watch me on the web from May. The reason for that is I am the ONLY councillor from Blenheim to have voted to allow cameras in the chamber. Both the Lib Dems voted AGAINST opening up democracy and broadcasting our meetings.
Next load of means that don't let facts get in the way...
James.
