Southend woman braced for 'Frankenstorm' as Hurricane Sandy set to hit USA

A FORMER Southend woman is bracing herself as 1,000-mile wide Hurricane Sandy hits her new home in America.

Nicci Hartland, whose family still lives in Southend, is taking refuge in her third floor flat in Newark, New Jersey, as 85mph winds and 11ft waves bash America’s East Coast.

Nicci said: “I’m pretty nervous because I’ve been in three or four of these storms before but they normally just head up the coast. This one is heading straight for us.

“We know we are going to have a lot more damage and flooding.”

The former Eastwood School pupil, who moved to the States 17 years ago, said the wind and rain had been “relentless” for the past 24 hours, people had stocked up on non-perishable food and only emergency vehicles are allowed on the roads.

Dog bites US postman - how many ex Southend people live in New York? The Pipe and Slippers Gazette scores with another scoop again .....

someone that deserted the UK 17 years ago makes the news in the southend Echo about some wind and rain in the US, for what reason exactly...? AND whats the purpose of mentioning she lives on the 3rd floor......who gives a crap.

...and is there any photos of her 'bracing herself in her 3rd floor apartment' to go with the non story..?

(yes its called an apartment and not flat as the story writer wrote)

I agree. This is totally pointless to be reporting this. Whats next, Man from Westcliff who moved to Las Vegas in 1980 goes to the casino and wins $20?

Obviously no sudden roadworks appearing in a quiet cul-de-sac in Southend so the Echo resorts to the next best thing......someone who emigrated to America 17 years ago!

Anyone from Southend who emigrated to Australia in the 1950's got a non-story for the desperate Echo?

As newsworthy as this storm is, why is the UK media concentrating only on the US? What about the Caribbean nations also affected? We have much stronger ties with many of those than we have with the US.

wow the negativity with so called non news is the same in the US as well as the UK lol. I am surprised it even got in the Echo. Just to clarify, I live in Newark Delaware not New Jersey

Maybe the Echo hasn't caught on to the fact that we all have access to International news nowadays ?

Fox news for example, being available to everyone.

I'm surprised The Echo didn't think it was Newark (Notts) even then, hardly relative to Southend on Sea is it?

Any car crashes in Newark (Delaware) they can regale us with?

are they having a bit of weather in New York?

They still haven't cleared up the mess that Katrina made of Louisiana and New Orleans but there's not enough rich, white voters down there to worry about

I have actually. They live in Lower Manhattan on Gold Street.

They live on the 66th floor so they are probably worried about the flood.

Mind you, his Beemer in the basement garage wil probably be a goner.

He's from Rayleigh, Essex - will that do?

I lived in Rhode Island USA for the past 6 years now, I'm originally from Eastwood Essex : ) we got hit with the storm, 86mph gusts and some rain, we got flooding too but no where near as much as New York. But it was a crazy storm and we got through it!

I've just ben reading another Echo 'scoop' about a woman overdosing whilst cooking Christmas dinner. Now, that story is either one year old or the Echo can now travel into the future.

I'm please for you LisaCx. By the way, has the Rhode Island Courier any stories in it about car crashes or christmas dinner overdoses in Southend?

Naah, I thought not.

Is Rhode Island Airport noisy by the way? Probably not else we'd had read of it here by now.

I saw a bit of the Fox News last night/early hours and the anchors seemed very disappointed as reporters and weather experts were saying the worst was now over, flood waters were dropping and winds were not quite so strong. All the anchors wanted to do was try and get as much sensationalism out of it as possible by coming back with "...but it is still dangerous?" or "...but flood waters are still high?" and "....but winds were still strong and damage could still occur?"
It was so laughable as you watched outside reporters and camera people positioning themselves to show the most "dramatic" backdrop they could (a flapping sign or swaying traffic light) when it was so obviously a situation that was getting a lot calmer.

That's a bit rich coming from someone who reads the Huffington comic.

Fox 'news' is the only 'news' station that won a court case granting it the right to lie.

I never denied that Asbo is to the right of Atilla the Hun or that his favourite TV news is tabloid trash - I've been telling him that for a long time. I just pointed out that the Huffington Post is about as far up the food chain as the Sun and the Daily Mail. If you people really want to know the truth why don't you read the better broadsheets and journals like Private Eye, Nature, New Scientist etc? But then maybe you don't really want to know the truth.

What makes you think I don't? For online news Huffington is leagues ahead of the Daily Heil, the Sun, even the BBC.

As for broadsheets only two are worth reading these days, the Guardian and the Independent.

I've been reading Private Eye for thirty years.

"Only two (broadsheets) are worth reading these days, the Guardian and the Independent".
.
I think what you really mean is you only read the papers that support your biased ideas. That's not quite the same as wanting to know the truth is it?
.
As for the Huffington, these are from todays front page ... the truth about ouija boards; naked footballers cause outrage; Amy's wedding dress stolen; Corden's pink swimsuit; not to mention special sections for Cheryl Cole, Harry Styles, TOWIE etc etc etc...
.
I rest my case.

I watch a variety of news channels.
It's the only way to see what is happening around the world.

For instance, on Saturday the lead story on BBC TV and Radio news, was about the NY Marathon being cancelled. Real earth shattering news.
