"Southend Pier 'cultural centre' is boringly named"

The pier's cultural centre The pier's cultural centre

SOUTHEND Pier’s new £3million cultural centre is too boringly named to attract any visitors.

That’s the verdict of Anna Waite, the former Tory leader of Southend Council, who has called for it to be rechristened to draw more people to the end of the pier.

The authority has said it is willing to listen to any offers to use the cultural centre, which has already hosted art exhibitions, musical performances, comedy gigs and private events since it opened in July.

But Mrs Waite questioned why it had been given such an uninspiring name in the first place.

She said: “Let’s face it, how many children or teenagers, or even any visitors, are going to get excited about visiting a ‘cultural centre’?

“Would you hold your wedding or celebrate an important birthday in a ‘cultural centre’?”

“Even our diehard locals are sceptical.”

Derek Jarvis, the Tory councillor responsible for culture, said the new building’s title could be changed in the future.

However, he argued the current moniker was not damaging its attractiveness in any way.

“It is a working title in a sense and I’m sure that, in the future, we can have a debate about what it should be called,” he said.

“But one thing is certain: it is not hindering business at all.

“We have had a lot of interest in the centre and it has been a great success so far.”

In other news Mrs Waite called for libraries to be renamed Super Headbuzz Centres, and railway stations Amazing Magical Ride Zones.

We went to the centre last night for a showing of Monster Humanoids from the Deep. Everyone there had a right good time and i will be looking out for more events.
Agree it is boringly named though. Perhaps it should be called the Phoenix For the amount of times it has come back from the ashes up that end of the pier.

The Phoenix, I like that. They could get Peter Kay to open it.

Whatever happened to the idea of the enormous seafront statue of Lee Brilleaux? If that's not going to happen and the airport isn't going to be named after him then I suppose the cultural wotsit would do. I suppose something posh like the Dame Helen Mirren Centre wouldn't go amiss either.

Just not The Waiting Room please, I don't want to be reminded of HER forever more!

is Waite missing seeing her name in print so much she has to let us all know what she thinks?

We don't care.

I've never seen anything advertised there, apart from a little piece in the Echo about the opening event. Where do they advertise?

As if renaming it will persuade more people to traipse over mile out to sea. If they really want more people to visit I suggest they move it a mile or so further north.

I would love to go out on the pier every week, but there is no secure cycle parking anywhere on the seafront.

Very middle class..great if you've got spare cash or your names jaime Oliver but for the average Southender travelling half way to Kent is a no go..
Most people I've met don't even know it exists.
Give it 12 months and it will follow in the wake of the Shoebury Youth Club,so the only name suitable is WHITE ELEPHANT .

As much I despise Waite, she does have a point. Not only is this the wrong type of building in the wrong place. A building named "cultural" or "arts" centre only promotes snobbery and the ordinary person in the street will be less inspired to visit if it were on land, let alone over a mile out at sea.

I took visitors there and they were soooo dissappointed. There is nothing at the end of the pier. Bring back the good old days - before my time, just look at the old photos and you will see what I mean. the pier used to be packed.

It was a joke, it was never actually planned to ever happen, why rename the airport after somebody that had nothing to do with it, abd who has more of a link to Canvey than Southend.

"The pier used to be packed" ... with things that were appropriate for the end of a very long pier. The word appropriate used to be top of the list on the "hierarchies of importance" of architects, planners, designers etc. Sadly these days it is fashionable to reject such sensible principles - especially amongst people who are not fully trained architects, planners, designers etc - which is why we have a tin box on the end of the pier and we'll be getting a museum for the quiet contemplation of the Prince of Prittlewell right in the middle of Southends primary chav magnet. I give up.

But Lee spent several years living in Leigh. Leigh is under the flight path and gets the bulk of the aircraft noise so it's a no-brainer shirley?

DogsMessInLeigh says...
9:52pm Sat 27 Oct 12

if he still lived under the flight path i am sure he wouldn't want the airport named after him....besides i reckon theres millions who don't know who he is, unlike John Lennon who did have one named after him, how about James Bond Airport as they did film scenes there once.

She was allegedly also known as BoB - The Butcher of Barling - for all the destruction she wrought on the borough's trees, usually organising felling to be done in the dead of night.
But now - as far as I can tell from comments by current council tories - she's no-one, a hasbeen local politician disliked by even her own party.
