Southend Airport announces £10million terminal expansion Southend Airport announces £10million terminal expansion

SOUTHEND Airport has announced it is about to start work on a new £10million terminal extension with the creation of more than 300 new jobs.

Airport bosses say work will get underway early next month. It will begin with the construction of a new arrivals area expected to be completed by May 2013.

The rest of the 90-metre extension will be ready by Christmas 2013 and will help cater for growing passenger numbers which are expected to top 2 million by 2020.

The extra room will allow for more check-in desks and baggage drop-off points and there will be more space for passengers in security.

Announcing the expansion this afternoon, Airport director Alastair Welch said: “Our aim is to ensure that we deliver a very special level of customer service in Southend and this extension will allow us to ensure we can continue to deliver those high standards as the airport grows.

“This is also further evidence of the role the redeveloped airport is playing in supporting the regeneration of the wider Essex economy.”

Kier has been appointed as contractor for the work.

The departure lounge will also be bigger, giving passengers more room to relax while they wait to board flights. A larger arrivals area will provide better baggage reclaim facilities and a larger immigration area.

Retail and catering facilities will be expanded throughout the terminal in order to provide a much wider range of shops and services available to passengers.

If you live by an airport surely you expect noise from the airplanes no matter how big or small they are wish people stop moaning as most of the people who are are to old to even use the facilities or benefit from it you had your time now less the rest of us plan for a better future

Exactly it amazes me that some people cannot see that their once cosy existence is going to have to move forward. The simple answer - move, you must have been aware when you bought your sheltered housing association bungalow that the sleeping giant of an airport would one day awaken and expand .....

To the Anti-Airport clowns:

Have you ever seen "Goldfinger"?

You know when James Bond goes for a round of golf with Goldfinger, he wins the game by switching the golf balls, and then just before bidding farewell he puts a tracking device in his car?

007 turns on his tracking device in the old DB5 and then takes off from an airport in pursuit of the dastardly villan?

That airport was Southend Airport. It was pretty big back then. If you've moved to where you are, then you have only yourself to blame.

Congrats to the airport for this expansion, let it bring us jobs, commerce and the luxury of more european flights at our doorstep.

Have you actually recorded the sound levels on multiple calibrated devices and had them verified by independent observers, if not than your statement that the noise levels are above permitted levels is irrelevant and could not be used as sporting everdence in any statement made in any claim against the airport.

I'm looking forward to the expanded airport, we use it a lot and will continue to do so. What infuriates me more than anything else (and it's a relatively minor gripe), is the access road by MacDonalds. That's going to need a re-think once things really 'take off'. I popped over the Argos on Saturday and the roundabout was chockablock and causing tailbacks in most directions.

That was always bad before the new terminal opened. I'd take out the mini-roundabout and put an exit only traffic light as you come out of the shopping park - that would ease the flow a bit. And you know how we love our traffic lights in Southend ;-)

I love it when all the SS9 whingers start on about the airport. Go and spend a couple of weeks living that close to Heathrow. You have nothing to complain about.

10-20 (depending on wind direction) small planes a day, each gone in 20 seconds - seriously, you probably get more noise from the road outside your front door. Go and moan about that...or better still, move to Cumbria or something.

I have an idea. Why doesn't Sarfend on Mud Council strenghten and widen the Pier? They could then use that as a second Runway. That way no one in Sarfend on Mud would be affected as the Planes would instead, annoy the f**k out of those living on the other side of the Estuary as they could take off and land in their direction instead. It would also revitalise the end of the Pier as they could build all the terminal buildings at that end and then build a High Speed Train to get from the Pier head to the shore. Sorted.

You're in Leigh? I've stated here before no one lives closer than I to the airport - it's at the end of my garden (literally). 'Whoosh' and the planes are gone. Southend Road is far noisier - and CONSTANT.

The smaller planes are noisy I'll admit but affect my BBQs? Hardly.

Exciting times for the town in my book. Who wants to schlepp all the way to Gatwicj, Stansted or Thiefrow? Naah, a ten minute stroll will do for me.

I was talking to jollyboy directly in regard to his statement that the aircraft operating out of the airport were breaking the permitted levels of noise that were set down in the new operating procedures.

Jollyboy it is impossible manipulate the decibel level of soundwaves.

Many aircraft are fitted with hush kits to reduce noise but once the soundwave leaves the engine it is physically impossible to manipulate them in any way shape or form, this is first grade knowledge...

However a new working theory to use sound to disperse sound is being tested, it is still in its very early stages but things look positive.

I am still waiting for a response to my previous comment:

I live a lot closer to the airport than Leigh, walking distance to it in fact.

Yes you see and hear the planes but they are hardly flying over every 10 minutes.

As for ruining BBQ's they take 30 seconds to fly over every few hours. The most I saw in a BBQ this year was 2, so affected about 1 minute of a 4 hour BBQ. Is that really so terrible!?

Really dont have any issue with them at all and the Airport is a positive for this town.

If it ever gets to a plane every 15 minutes then maybe Ill change my mind but people need to look at the bigger picture for a change.

As Southend Council is arranging for the report on the nuisance complaints for the airport I hardly think that is independent. It does not take much to calibrate the decibels of noise and i can tell you it is more than that told to us that it would be near Blenheim School and where I live!
If you wanted to experience real noise , you should have gone to the SEAN meetings when every 5 minutes during the meeting they would play an extended recording of a plane flying over. The true experience is no where as loud or long lasting as that was. I can clearly remember Blenhiem School was used as part of the antis big arguments. But bottom line was not this school and most of the houses around it built during the end of the era of noisy slow low flying fuel spitting Carvairs and BA111's ? .Sort of defeats any noise argument.

And i can tell you it isn't.

But unless one of us fronts up with some evidence, both our points of view mean precisely b*gger all

Seriously please tell me that you are joking, did they really do that....

Suppose all those attending (apart from yourself) fell for it, hook line and sinker!

It is actions such as that, that make the anti protest such a joke.

Have you actually recorded the sound levels on multiple calibrated devices and had them verified by independent observers, if not than your statement that the noise levels are above permitted levels is irrelevant and could not be used as sporting everdence in any statement made in any claim against the airport.

If you have done the above please publish the full technical readout that the divice would have printed out also please publish the certificate of calibration and the contact details of the independent observers.

Thank You and Advance.

Why move under the flight path in the first place?
Jollyboy:

I'm still waiting, as are many other I would guess.

Have to go to work now so probably can't replay as quick as I would like too, got a a day chained to a desk doing Health & Safety Risk Assessments...

yes they did for a while the lauch meeeting into Rochford a good example, I also endorse what you say about things like this making the anti airport protest a joke. I have always supported the airport and its expansion but I have also listened to the points of view from the anti side, but found the points of view to be exagerated or with out any form of concrete evidence.

Never. They will get it ground running but without multi millions (or even with) I doubt it will fly again.

No chance whatsoever of it flying.

Next year is also the last time you will get to see a Vulcan in the air, as XH558 will be grounded permanently at the end of 2013.

I do hope it's gets to the Southend airshow this year.

The news came from an Easyjet employee in scheduling and he posted it on pPrune forum. Stansted will gain a new A320 for longer flights like Egypt, whilst the replacement A319 will operate from Southend to Berlin and Krakow.

Great news about the 2 new destinations which should tie in with completion of the first extension phase in may.

I can' t understand why LSA have to wait until late 2013 before starting the consultation process on the controlled airspace application. See statement on their website. It will improve safety above us and with the number of flights increasing surely it should start right away

Jollyboy: I am still waiting, if you do not have the recordings why not just come out and say that you don't, or would that mean you would have to admit you have zero proof of your statement you put over as a fact.

If you have the recordings I expect to see them for every day for at least a month to give a fully comparable account of all the movements, I would also expect to see the full calibration certificate and independent observers details.

I will not hold my breath waiting.

Brilliant news about the new buildings. I just wish we had a few Eddie Stobarts running the country instead of, well, you know, what we do have.

If I could just pop in the fact that, here in beautiful Basildon, aircraft fly over from Heathrow, Stansted, City and they are quiet enough that you kind of relax to their sound.

However, sometime after 2:00am Basvegas residents begin making their way to their second homes. As they stroll home through the canyon that is Ghyllgrove the gently sleeping community, many of whom have to rise at around 6 am for work, get treated to foul-mouthed youngsters intent on letting the residents know what a wonderful time they have had and how they do not give a "F---" about any old git who pleads for peace because " They should be effin dead anyway"
I would rather sleep by the last row of lights at the take off end of Southend's runway than suffer the stupendous noise of these layabout louts.

I wonder if Eddie could extend his runway right over Bas Vegas?

We have had members of our family travel through Southend to Amsterdam. There comments "Brilliant",so to all the knockers of this new found airport, just be greatfull you have this facility on your doorstep. And they were caught up by the Fog last week and had to wait three hours on the plane,no complaints from them.Easy Jet staff were in there words very helpfull.

Do Stobarts intend to fill in the glass walkway from the aircraft to immigration? In May I found it very cold walking and waiting in the open. I did write to management but they not reply. I think this time of the year, it must be very uncomfortable for the passengers. Great airport, though.

Time for all members of SAEN to find something new to winge about. They are a nuisance that has cost local residents a lot of cash, fighting ludicrous court cases which collapsed one by one till there was no issue left on which they could fight.
Their website continues to publish large quantities of blatant lies, fortunately easily disproved.
There are no "facts" on their website that stand even the briefest of scrutiny. They are like an itch that you continually scratch but won't go away. Very annoying, unlike the noise from aircraft which is minimal and very infrequent.
