Bomb disposal unit blows up five anti-aircraft shells and one fuse off Westcliff

A CONTROLLED explosion was carried out to destroy Second World War ordnance found off the Westcliff coast.

Five anti-aircraft shells and a fuse from a 50-pound bomb was discovered in the Ray about half a mile off the coast at 11.30am yesterday morning.

The Navy's bomb disposal squad was called in but agreed to attend at 9.30am this morning due to the tides.

I heard the explosion from Shoeburyness this morning at 09:30. I thought it was the MOD but it must have been this,
