Review into future of South Essex Homes
4:10pm Tuesday 16th October 2012 in News
A FORMER senior councillor has called into question the need to review the future of South Essex Homes.
The organisation manages Southend Council’s housing stock on its behalf and nationally all such organisations are being scrutinised and reviewed as management agreements are coming to an end.
In a meeting to take place on Wednesday October 17 the community services and culture scrutiny committee will consider whether to keep the organisation going or to bring it back in house.
Mark Flewitt, former cabinet member, said: ”Why are we doing this if South Essex Homes has been given a clean bill of health from the Audit committee, is trading well and has rent arrears under control? Why are we going through this torturous process now when there is no £1million savings identified?”
South Essex Homes has held responsibility for the everyday running of more than 6,000 council properties for the last seven years, but chiefs are considering axing it to cut costs.

i observe the fact that now that most of the council housing has been sold in 'right to but' what we see is a dramatic return to bad landlords and harsh rents.
of course a Tory will speak out against any change in the comfy way that the council manages (or lack thereof) its council stock.
because its bad for business so to speak.
