Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty back on Southend Pier to film new TV show

TV chef Jamie Oliver was back on Southend Pier with farmer Jimmy Doherty to film a new program.

The Essex boys took over the former Pavilion building and called it “Jamie and Jimmy’s” for the Channel 4 show.

Visitors to the iconic structure were met with notices saying access to the pierhead may be restricted while filming takes place.

Fisherman John Bolton, 61, from Loughton, said he uses the pier once a fortnight.

He said: “It has reduced the angling potential up there because it has taken a lot of space. But there are a lot more people that use the pier than fishermen.

“There is nothing really at the beginning of the pier and if you want to fish at the end you are a bit marrooned. Something like a bigger version of the Three Shells would be good.”

Keith Amies, 65, and Julie Robinson, of Westcliff and Leigh, say they don’t walk up the pier as often as they would like but they were supportive of a cafe.

Mr Amies, 65, said: “The filming didn’t hinder us. Anything that helps the pier is good.”

Ms Robinson, 52, added: “A cafe is a good idea for a coffee and a cake but you want a reasonable price, not a London price.”

Film crews are set to return on Thursday, October 16 for another day of shooting.

Terry and Marilyn Crone visited the pier from Brentwood.

Terry, 64, said: “The pier is brilliant, the cafe is nice. They said it was going to be a fish and chip shop, it will bring people on the pier.”

The programme, of the same name, is due to air on Channel 4 at the end of November.

Good Luck to you Jamie & Jimmy. Bring some quality fresh fish & chips to the Southend Pier.
I'd be more then happy to walk to the end if there was some quality food on arrival.
If you were there yourself, that would of course, be an added bonus.
Go for it, do your publicity... and get 'em walking over a mile.
Love the idëa: just do it!

Bet they had to drag them out screaming and kicking from the "Cultural Centre" to get the filming done.

Once the filming is done it'll be offloaded and all their shiney, happy, trendy mates will have long gone. I saw the two fellas filming 'Shed Heads' on Shoebury Common a few years back - loads of paint monkeys doing all the hard graft (off camera) the finished prog showed the 'owner' "proud to retain this in the family, blah, blah blah", shortly after it was aired the 'For Sale' sign went up.

TV - all part of the 'bread & circuses' for the plebs.

Been to Southend seafront this weekend with two small children. Not child friendly. Getting them out with the cycle path was a nightmare as cyclists seem to cycle as close as they can as if making a point and goodness only knows they have a wide enough cycle path. Then the Marriotts take-away fish and chips said too busy to do take away. Dissapointed children, no toilets close by. Will not go there again. Plenty of other places to go - away from southend !

Great news! a few less plebs coming to our town - stay in Basildon or wherever.

Moaning about a fish shop being busy - priceless!

YAHOOOOOOOOO This news has really made my day so much so that I am going to open that bottle of wine in the fridge and have a right good drink, what the heck I'll even eat the wifes Bubbly bar.

Where abouts in Southend were you as I did see a sour faced man with a couple of bawling out of control kids.

well you said it...its a cycle path, stay out of it unless you are riding a bike, do you let your children wander into the road if you are getting them out 'roadside'...no you don't i bet, i have had many near misses with fools just walking or stepping onto the cycle path....park your car a few feet from it thats why there is markings, theres enough room to get out of your car, or try the carpark in the middle of the central reservation.
and theres toilets at Adventure island down the slope, the kids would have soon cheered up seeing the amusement park i am sure and theres no cyclists there either.

It's just a location for a program - he has no intention of using it as an eatery - I understand that Van Looey and some others want to open a restaurant/cafe there once filming is over. It's then down to SBC to gain the most effective deal for the place.
