Mums and children are world champs

YOUNG street dancers – and their parents – are toasting success, after winning four first places at the world championships.

Wiggles Dance Studio, in Southend, swept the board at the UDO World Championships in Blackpool, the world’s biggest street dance competition, with a team of parents competing for the first time taking top spot.

Lorraine Field, owner of the dance school, in Aviation Way, said: “It’s just unbelievable. For one school that only took five teams with us to have that amount of success is absolutely amazing.”

The school’s Team Frenzy beat 34 teams to the under-18s title, Team Poison won the over-18s category and solo dancer Alfie Williams took top spot in the under-16 newcomer category.

A team of 13 mums called Swaggamama, some of whom only took up dancing three months ago, got one of the biggest cheers of the night, when they won the parents’ competition. Mrs Field said: “There were tears of joy. They were absolutely over the moon. They couldn’t believe it. There was so much excitement. When the mums won, all the children ran on the stage to congratulate them.”

The school also managed a number of second and third places in the seventh annual contest at the town’s Winter Gardens.

Its highest position last year was fifth.

Another of its teams, called Off Limits, which was made up from a dozen dancers aged 12 to 15, made it to the semi-final of the CBBC dance show called Alesha Dixon’s Street Dance Stars.

Team Frenzy and Team Poison will compete in a televised audition for Sky One’s dance competition Got To Dance next Thursday.
