Updated: Three injured after crash in Prince Avenue Southend

Updated: Car smashes into KFC in Southend. Updated: Car smashes into KFC in Southend.

Three people have been injured after a car smashed into a shop in Southend.

The black Ford Escort was travelling out of Southend on the A127 at Prince Avenue at 11.20am today when it left the road, went over the central reservation and hit a man sitting on a moped outside the Kegra scooter shop.

The car then hit the shutters on the Prince Food and Wine off-licence.

Three men were injured - two suffered leg injuries and the third had minor injuries.

The East of England Ambulance Service received several 999 calls from passers-by stating a car has collided with a shop front and people were injured.

Three ambulances, a rapid response car, a duty officer, the trusts hazardous area response team and the Hertfordshire Air Ambulance raced to the scene.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “We treated three casualties at the scene, two of which have received lower limb fractures and the third is believed minor.”

The road is currently closed between Hobleythick Lane and Cuckoo Corner while investigations are ongoing.

Motorists reported traffic was stretching back to Kent Elms corner just after the incident.

The road was reopened just after 4pm today - five hours after the crash.

The 40 year-old Ford Escort driver, from Southend, has since been arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drink and drugs.

So the headline is Car smashes into KFC... and the car didn't crash in to KFC?

Come on Echo...

Your report says he was heading out of Southend, crossed the central reservation, hit a scooter outside Kegra and *THEN* hit KFC... he would have had to do a U-turn to do that!

They shut a section as they 'thought' they could land the chopper there but there were too many hazards so it landed in our field.

So if it was travelling away from Southend, went across the central reservation, hit the moped outside the scooter shop, then KFC - how the hell was that possible?

KFC is to the right of the scooter shop, so therefore it should have hit KFC first and the scooter shop second?

Or did it do a magical flip and spin back somehow? I'm extremely confused!

I think the trouble is the Echo like to get 'any' info down ASAP or they get berated for being slow off the mark about the town news. Sometimes the info coming in is from people who call in on their mobiles, don't know the scene too well, are misheard etc etc.
I think they did well to get the news up so fast. It certainly helped me get a grip of what was going on and I was almost at the scene.
One minute I am sitting listening to children playing and the radio, the next minute all hell breaks lose with a chopper above my head, fence panels crashing in, garden furniture blowing about, windows & doors slamming shut and a ruddy great chopper landing in my garden! LMAO!! chaos...
It would be easy to get confused if you were there at the scene trying to figure out where you were, what shop it was the car spun into, what direction...
The article gets corrected and edited as more info comes in...

Very lucky not to hit a Southend-bound vehicle when it crossed that carriageway - the phase of the lights must have been other than "go - EW" and that, in turn, may lead to a partial explanation of the incident.

Absolutely awful thing to witness. Hope all the people involved are doing well.

Instead of getting these joke orders at CRI and CDAS, he should get a couple of years in prison for causing risk to other people, and for all you do gooders, thats if he is charged, I have friends who work along that parade, and thank heavens they are all safe, come on southend magistrates, give this Nob a heavy punnishment if charged

I get VERY annoyed with the way the police handle accidents.

OK directly after an incident there are fire and medical people and it would make sense to either totally or partially shut a road whilst they deal with the situation.

What drives me MAD is why is the road shut for 4 1/2 hours ???

I was stuck on the M25 for 5 hours after a accident - yes there was a need for say 30 minutes to close the carraigeway, but afterwards we just sat twiddling our thumbs - the police did not even make an effort to open one lane.

I guess the same as this accident - the police see no priority in opening just 1 lane to easy the congestion / tail back problems

There is a genuine need to preserve the whole scene for physical and forensic evidence hence the need to close that whole section of the A127 (the Escort did cross the west and east bound carriageways). However, 4 1/2 to 5 hours is excessive especially since Essex and most other forces publicised their new and revolutionary 3D image laser scanner which they boast takes half the time to survey the scene.

Please dont tar everyone with the same brush. i'd love a newer car but unfort thats not an option. I can't believe the moronic rubbish that some people have put on here, without knowing any of the facts (other than from an early online report which has proved to be lacking in accuracy). Shows a serious lack of intelligence or pathetic attempt to get some attention. Either way, you don't know the facts so you can't make judgements. And some of you need to grow up.

I hope all involved are OK.

Thankfully I have been accident free for over 20 years, and agree with your comment - we are penalised enough with insurance premiums ever rising due to the increasing cost of other people's claims - don't go crushing our cars and revoking our licences. The reason the have to close the roads for so long is because in serious accident situations like this with the possiblity of a fatality. The accident scene becomes a crime scene and the accident investigators need to gather all the evidence they can get to secure a prosecution if required . If they open the roads again the vital tell tail signs of what occured are lost and maybe the chances to keep a dangerous driver of the road are lost.I am not suggesting this is the case here but that is why the roads stay closed for so long. It was a least two hours before they could stabalise one of the injured before he could be air lifted to hospital , only then can they really start the crash investigation.

Escorts are the last of the Ford rust buckets from the 1980's.
To keep it legally on the road is a waste of money which is why you don't see them anymore. It's cheaper to buy a decent car.
So that means most Escort drivers are driving dodgy motors..just the sort to knock back some booze and drugs prior to trashing Southend in their uninsure, untaxed death-trap...shockin
