TO THE EVENING ECHO NEWSPAPER: I was absolutely astonished at your story in the Echo this evening. This clearly demonstrates that Bosses at Southend Council have absolutely no integrity whatsoever. It would also suggest that they credit Leigh residence as stupid. The claim that noise is coming from aircraft from other airports is absolutely absurd and insults the intelligence of local people. As I see it, the council will say anything to justify a ludicrous decision to allow expansion of a site too small and in the wrong location for an airport. Nigel Holdcroft needs to stand under the flight path in Leigh for a short while and watch Easy Jet aircraft taking off and landing. Surely the reverse thrust of the engine on landing would be all the evidence he needs that the aircraft are from Southend. Also, the claim with regard to not receiving any more complaints about noise since Easy Jet operations started is equally as absurd as the other claims in your report. To the best of my knowledge the council have not set up a specific complaints contact with regard to airport noise. The only avenue open to local residence is to complaint to Stobart Air. Clearly a conflict of interest! I feel reading the Echo recently is like reading advertising literature for the airport. Not bringing us local independent unbiased news. You should consider conducting your own opinion poll of local residence and print the results. This will confirm that Leigh residence lives are now blighted by low flying planes. Also in closing, I must add that whilst the Echo and Council continue with the positives of the expansion very little is published on the negatives. Apart from the obvious noise, traffic congestion and damage to the environment you might want to consider a disaster may not be far away. Recent events in Lagos show what happens when a plane falls short of the runway. I can remember two incidents in the local area of light aircraft from Southend falling out of the sky. What happens if the next one is a passenger jet? It has happened at Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick!!! Southend next? Perhaps you will not be so positive if it falls on a local school or heaven forbid the hospital.
Nigel holdcroft live s in leigh so must have some experience of the "noise"
Indeed Nigel Holdcroft lives in Leigh (just about) but I’m not so sure that he lives under the flight path as nor do I.
However, yesterday afternoon I was at a friend’s house that is also not under the flight path although somewhat nearer the flight path than Mr Holdcroft. Being fine and warm the widows were open. On three occasions we found ourselves unable to hear each other speak as a plane flew its course on take off.
Yes, indeed it can be said that the modern jet aircraft operating from Southend are not as noisy as the old Bristol Freighters, Carvairs etc. In those days I did live under the flight path in Prince Avenue and loved every minute of it. I was a boy then and a keen plane spotter but as we grow older we don’t necessarily become Nimbys but some of us become a little more understanding and sympathetic towards others who for what ever reason have to endue others distractions. I for one would not like to live where I did as a boy but I feel very sorry for those who now do and are disturbed by aircraft noise.
For the those in this town who’s answer is always and nothing more than ‘ If you don’t like it …move’ I have time no for."

Claims of noisy jets at Southend Airport are rejected by council

PEOPLE who protest about increased noise from Southend Airport are confusing its flights with other airports, council chiefs claim.

Bosses at Southend Council said the number of complaints about aircraft noise was at roughly the same level as it had been before easyJet moved into the town in April.

They believe many residents living under the flight path mistake planes flying to or from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London City airports for those heading into Southend.

Despite this, they’ve agreed to set up a committee to monitor complaints and ensure the airport doesn’t breach strict limits on flight paths and night operations.

Andy Lewis, corporate director for the environment, said: “Complaints regarding noise since the enhanced level of operation of the airport have not increased. The situation is complicated by the level of flights in and around Southend (from other airports).”

Council leader, Nigel Holdcroft, added: “I think residents are generally supportive of the airport, but it is important we’re seen to monitor the situation and ensure it is following the rules.”

Since easyJet started routes to nine overseas destinations, the number of people flying from Southend has rocketed. More than 100,000 passengers used the airport over the last two months.

People living under the flight path in Leigh claim their lives are now blighted by low-flying planes. The new committee will be given regular updates by the airport on the number of flights arriving and leaving Southend.

But Liz Marcusson, 47, from Leigh, said: “They can’t stop the flights from coming in, can they? I don’t care what people say – it’s much noisier.” No one from the airport wished to comment.
