  • "Another piece of good news. Blimey, the Echo is really going all out today.

I didn't run myself but the small contribution we made I hope reconciles us with the runners. LOL.

No, seriously, well done everybody. Runners, organisers and volunteers, as well of course the people who made the donations. Great job, well done.

As for the rubbish, only last week our councillor Habermel visited us to discuss this in ernest. The problem is not with the organisers or anybody in particular, it appears to be more a mindset. You come out of a shop, unwrap whatever it is you may have bought and throw the litter in the street. Period. But then, why does nobody say anything? If you did that in Germany someone will stop you and ask you to pick it up and rightly so. That's what I hear are the rubbish bins provided for. But maybe that is only hearsay."

Runners get under way Runners get under way

HUNDREDS of runners had a load of fun and helped raise thousands of pounds by competing in the annual Southend Half Marathon yesterday.

The athletes consisting of a mix of fun runners and serious running club members circled their way around Shoebury, Thorpe Bay and Southend seafronts in glorious sunshine to raise money for Havens Hospices.

More than £60,000 was gathered from the event which also featured a children’s fun run, musical entertainment and massages for people pushing their bodies to the limit.
