LEFTOVERS from Southend’s dinner plates will soon be helping to heat the nation’s homes.
The town’s binmen are to start collecting food waste in special caddies as part of the latest drive to cut waste sent to landfill sites.
Contractor Cory Environ-mental will shortly be delivering caddies to homes, so leftovers can be collected and taken to a special unit in Cambridge to be rotted down and turned into methane gas.
The methane will then be used to generate electricity.
