Teenagers prepare to design £280,000 skatepark

TEENAGERS have been brainstorming ideas for the new £280,000 skatepark at Leigh Marshes.

The Connexions youth service in the town has been holding weekly meetings to ensure the development will meet youngsters' needs when it opens next year.

"Skateparks look better with graffiti over them. If it is bare concrete, it will look lame and horrible. You need graffiti to liven it up. People have done murals for 9/11 and stuff to say just because something bad’s happened it doesn’t mean you can’t keep your hopes up."

Billy Hannan, 15

The skatepark will finally go ahead, thanks to a £150,000 lottery grant, which will top up the £130,000 promised by Leigh Town Council.

A football pitch, basketball nets and a shelter are to be included in the scheme, but it has yet to be decided what materials should be used, or how the park should look.

Lee Kelsey, 17, said Connexions had been looking at the best material for the skateboard ramps - concrete seemed the best bet.

The group also had to decide how the ramps would be laid out to give skaters the best ride, he added. Connexions also hoped to be able to set up separate beginners' and advanced areas.

Lee, of Cavendish Gardens, Westcliff, stressed the new skatepark was badly needed, especially by younger skaters.

A lack of places for young people to go in Southend meant they were being pushed out of Chalkwell Park by older kids sitting on ramps in the park.

He said: "You get an older lot, ones who want to fight. They get out of hand and spoil it for the rest of us. That's why we want to find new areas to go."

The new skatepark will also aim to pass on positive messages to teenagers, through graffiti slogans such as "Respect life, not a knife".

Billy Hannan, 15, of Kingswood Close, Leigh, said graffiti was a way of getting constructive messages across.

He said: "Skateparks look better with graffiti over them. If it is bare concrete, it will look lame and horrible. You need graffiti to liven it up.

"People have done murals for 9/11 and stuff to say just because something bad's happened it doesn't mean you can't keep your hopes up."

The teenagers are now in the process of applying for an extra £20,000 from the Government's Fix-It programme for the project.

At the end of November, companies hoping to win the skatepark contract will be showing their proposals to youngsters.

Youth worker Martijin Van Gogh, explained: "It's good to ask young people what they think. The plans will start off in the youth centre and then go around schools and libraries.

"Young people will be able to tick boxes to say which design they want."

Teenagers are also invited to contact Connexions with ideas for the skatepark, by calling 01702 478426, or e-mailing martijinvangogh@southend.gov.uk

I am very concerned as it appears this skatepark is being designed once again by people who do not skate.

I hope this doesnt end up like every other council park in our district, unusable rubbish.

The email address on this article does not work and I called the number and they did not have a clue what I was talking about.

Looks like this is going to go well.

I am dead against graffiti on the riding surface of the parks. It unhelpfully conceals imperfections in the riding surface and some aerosol paints can make it unpredictably slippery. On the platforms and wals, fine, NOT on the riding surface please.

Letting teenagers decide how a park should be made does not seem like the best idea! You need to get actual skaters involved, preferably those who know what does and does not work. With the amount of money being spent it seems silly to limit yourself to just a small group of people for ideas.

dan haines, westcliff says...
3:29pm Thu 1 Nov 07

There's a huge community of skaters in and around Southend who have been riding for over 10 years, surely their input would be more valuable than a group of teenagers?

Hopefully you realise how serious this actually is for some people and should not be considered just an amusement park to keep kids off the streets!

It will be very disappointing if this turns out to be anywhere near the same poor quality like many of the other attempts in Essex.

ranting youth worker, Leigh-on-sea says...
3:46pm Thu 1 Nov 07

Listen to Phil, read his comment posted 11:13 Nov 1st.....its all very well asking young people what they want, I agree but in the past this has proven to have back-fired mainly due to the in-experience of those being asked.... the previous ramp complex that stood on the proposed site was world class. People came from miles around to ride and spectate. It could be great again. If the council intend on spending such a large amount of money on this project surely their main concern should be to "get it right" With regards to the design size & lay-out of the planned ramps: Proper consultation with "EXPERIENCED" Skateboarders is key to this development working successfully!
Southend has a great skate tradition with many older riders (like phil) who would be more than happy to help manage the design ideas. come on people don't goof this one up like the one in Eastwood (the design & layout there is a joke)

Phil Clutton, Southend says...
5:31pm Thu 1 Nov 07

I would be grateful if this feedback could be passed onto the councils.

The last post by youth worker is correct.

In its heyday leigh on sea skatepark was known by people globally. The largest U.S. skate teams visited here in the early nineties.

Wil the possibility of skatboarding going into the olympics surely we should be once again concentrating on world class facilities to the UK athletes.

I do not understand why we need another football pitch when there is one in pretty much every park in essex.

As for the quotes about Chalkwall I think this is rubbish too. The reason no-one goes there is because it is pretty much unusable. As for the quote about older ones who want to fight, I am 32 and really am not interested in fighting anyone, just enjoying a skate.

If the park is designed correctly and well used then it will be naturally policed by skateboarders looking after their facility, ensuring that skaters of all ages can use it.

If you want to get in touch with me you can e mail me at phil@nueu.net

Ok, where to start, I'm 36, I've seen over 20 years of skateboarding generations come and go, I dont skate as much as I used to but there is still a special place for it in my heart.

I have to say, I have seen one disaster after another, in the name of truly unusable skate parks to everyone other than 7 year olds, perhaps the council make these parks so it is virtually impossible to injur oneself. Im beginning to think so.
You need to listen to the experts and Im afraid to blow all of the genuine skateboarder trumpets in this area BUT WE ARE THE EXPERTS! period.
You have to listen to the likes of Phil Clutton, Paul Griffiths, Jamie Moneypenny and any other skater that has been into the sport longer than the kids entrusted to designing the new skate park but hey, come on guys, I'd be happy to front a couple of grand on a bet that regardless of all our endeavours to secure a decent skate park, you know it'll be ruined just like the other OOOH I dont know, mmm, 20 or so. Just going to be a significant amount more money gone to the dogs this time.
RINSE AND REPEAT PHIL, RINSE AND REPEAT.

Lets be honest, its already doomed. aaaaah

youth shelters only attract non users, who intimidate the real park users and give the park a bad name. ALWAYS take advice from life long skateboarders who have been there through the good times and bad times, these people are the ones with the knowledge and experiience to design and be counted on to help produce a park that is not only good to day but still suitable in 10, 20 years time. There are so many bad skateparks because councils have not listen to EXPERIENCED skateboarders.

Teenagers prepare to design £280,000 skatepark.... Who are these people..? What Knowledge do they have regarding skateboarding? The proposed area for the skateboard park used to be one of the biggest and best in Europe. Why? Beacuae it was designed by Skateboarders with knowledge. I have been Skateboarding for 20 years and have seen so many places given a grant and it is poorly wasted destroyed and unused. It would be a true shame to see the park being built only to be abandoned. Why do we need to to have a football pitch attached to it there are hudreds of pitches around the marsh area. I believe we all could truely have one of the best parks in Britain. We could put Leigh-on-sea back on the map and put smiles on the faces of a new generation of Skateboarders thus not creating more Chav's.. there are so many good examples of skateboard parks we only need to look at them and reconstruct one on a similar basis for leigh.

e.g Cantaloes in camden london, Stokwell brixton, Ipswich skate park, saffron Waldon, Brentwood, Great Dunmow.Stoke, St albans, Northampton, etc.....

These places are all great with a good vibrant scene.. It Doesnt take that much Knowledge to speak to the right people who have designed them. Please dont waste this money there are so many people pending on the right move. However i have seen it before and i will be ashamed to have to see it again.

There's been a lot of skateparks come and go in Southend over the years, yet the one that remains in the memories of all of us is Leigh Skate Park. The reason for this, is that it was well designed, well ran (at one stage) and attracted well known skateboarders on a gobal level. It would be great to have that again down at Leigh.

But the guys are right, if you don't have input from older skateboarders....the guys that have been doing it for 10 years and more, you will find that the park won't be utilised anywhere near the amount it could be if it was well designed. We've all seen it happen before and it would be a real shame for another load of governement funding to be wasted.

Please use the resources you have in a wise manner, these guys want to get involved and will help you out no end. They've all got great ideas and really know what they are talking about. Let's try and make the new park something that will live up to the original Leigh-on-Sea Park legacy!!

Local councils attitude to Skateparks in Southend is and always has been a joke. £280,000.00 at a councils disposal and they choose to use 'teenagers' as a focal point for the distribution of these funds?! A fantastically idiotic decision by Southend Council.

Southend has at it's disposal a large group of adults (thats ADULTS) who would be happy to influence/help/comme
nt on the process of a skatepark from design to construction for the benefit of ALL age groups... it would be nice to see tax payers money spent in a sensible way.

Just because kids like swimming does not mean they should design a swimming pool, and the same can be said for a skatepark. The best skateparks in the country are designed by professionals, who are experts in what layouts work safely and what materials should be used. If this is done right Southend could have a world class facility, if it is done wrong, you will have an expanse of concrete wasteland that no one wants to go to. This project needs to be done RIGHT. Please see sense and get experts in, the very fact that some of their main concerns is the decorating of the place should be ringing alarm bells!

My name is Danny Way.

Second to Tony Hawk, I am arguably the most influential skateboarder of all time, only better looking. For those who don't understand, here's a realistic perspective, I am, in stature to the skating community , what David Beckham is to football.

I visited Essex recently for a Demo at a quality concrete park and have visited Leigh on Sea before when the ramp complex was at it's best. It was easily one of the best places we toured to and a fascinating display of carpentry.

You've got to ask yourself 2 questions - 1. do you want to build a cheap and nasty, second rate skatepark that will eventually become derelict because of under use (due to bad design) and be seceptible to vandalism and street urchins?

or 2. Do you want to take the opportunity to build a world class skate complex that will attract the likes of myself and our professional teams, people who these kids aspire to, and generate a centre of excellence for this up and coming sport - within your budget?

If you put your thinking caps on, you could even make this beneficial to local business and even tourism.

I think you should listen to these guys, they, like myself, have dedicated their lives to the love of this sport and you simply CANNOT ignore their experience.

Thanks
D.Way

You have some big shoes to fill by planning to build a new skatepark on a site that once had the best outdoor ramp complex in the whole of Europe ( visited by X-Games gold medalists such as Danny Way, Tony Hawk and Bucky Lasek to name just a few ).

There is around 130 years of combined skateboard knowledge in the few posts on here... please learn from past expensive council mistakes ( Chalkwell, Wakering... ) and get some qualified people involved.

anyone who hasn't skated longer than a year will have no clue as to what is needed as they would have only ever seen the truly abismal efforts made by the council, and let's be honest they suck like Hoover. I helped build Leigh on Sea skate park and ran it for 2 years, i've skated since 1985 so i think i know what i'm talking about. let skaters with the know how design the new park or we'll end up with a very large area of unusable rubbish that's only good for Rollerbladers if they still exist. thanks for your time.

I'm 17 years old and a leigh skateboarder born and raised. I've been skating for around 7 years and i myself am aware of the legendary standards that were set at the old rampage skatepark. If a skatepark could of been so good 20 odd years ago, then there is no reason why it cannot be now. This oppurtunity cannot be simply wasted merely because the right kind of people aren't approached. I'm gonna find out when these meetings take place and voice my opinion on the decision over the final design of the park. After all, i am a local and i owe to those that made some much history in the development of rampage. The very thing of which made myself take up skateboarding.

I probably don't need to add much to what has already been said above, by many of the friends that I have skated with in Southend for the past 20+ years.

But I will say this, whatever you build, build it small. If you build the DC maga ramp in Leigh on Sea, only about 3 people will be able to skate it. Skateparks do not need to look like Alton Towers.

There are now numerous examples of well build, concrete based skate parks in England that will withstand the coming and going of fashions, trends and fads.

Speak to experienced skateboarders, build small and build to last.

The idea of having a beginners area and an advanced area is good.
Many kids will feel intimidated by the level of ability of some of the older skaters. No one wants that!
Why not let the kids design the beginners area??? but please let the older guys input into design of the advanced area as it will be mostly them that use it.

To all the over 20 skaters that have left comments on this blog: It is not young people that are designing the skatepark for Leigh. Of course they have a say in the whole process and what they would like. However, so do you. What I would like to clarify as well is that three professional companies (with lots of experience in building skateparks, including Ipswich) are the ones initially designing the park. Around the end of November these designs will be ready and then the wider community will be consulted. The skate park is not purposely built for young people but for the community. The young people under 19 are the ones that have applied for the money in the first place, through a fund called Fix It (which is designed for young people under the age of 19 to help them in and around their community). They hope to raise £20,000 through this fund.
I hope this is useful information for you. We would like to work together on this, not against each other. So any positive criticism or ideas are very welcome, negative communication is not helping us to get anywhere.

Thanks for your time.
Please get in touch if you would like as your knowledge is obviously welcome.

Kindest greetings,

Martijn

All these comments are great but please this is a serious matter so lets stick to the point.

The council currently have a design from Russel Leisure LTD which is apalling and unusable. Funny that this design is by a company that makes playgrounds!!!!

When are councils going to learn that these things need to be built by people with experience.

In response to Gavins comments on having something small I disagree.

Even if we did end up with a mega ramp that only 3 local skater would skate we would probably get US pro skaters over again.

I have e mailed leigh council today with my thoughts and look forward to their response.

this is another typical example of councils getting it all wrong. asking youger skaters who have been into the sport for only a short while is a major mistake, consulting older more travelled skaters can help design a park that will inspire and interest skaters of all ages and ablities for many years. the original leigh on sea park design was ahead of its time and saw visitors from all over the world. the new park should reflect this and it should aim to be one of the premier skateparks in the Country not just another waste of taxpayers money. we can only hope?

I would like to hear people considering the thought of a SKATE PLAZA rather than a trational skate park. Because at least if it is a skate plaza then that green ramp company that made Chalkwell can't mess it up. I would also suggest that the council decides what it wants. Does it want a SKATE PARK , or is it a FOOTBALL PITCH, BASKETBALL COURT, TEEN VILLAGE.....skate park.
