BUSINESS have hit out at a power company after roadworks have killed their trade.

Works in London Road, Benfleet have stopped customers entering shops and caused issues for pedestrians.

Susan Bulling, 53, owner of Ellie Mae Florists in the busy road said it has been a nightmare.

She said: "Works started on Monday September 10 and they have dug holes and it has just got worse and worse.

"They have now dug a moat like hole all around my business and it is so dangerous for customers who want to come into my shop.

"It has been horrendous.

"I had to close the shop on Wednesday September 12 as it was so bad but it has now got worse.

"People have been trying to walk past and they can't get there as it is all closed off.

"Other business have told me they are also angry about it.

"There was so much vibration one day I thought they were coming to come through the window.

"The door dropped a bit due to the works and I couldn't get out but the workmen did come and help."

She said pedestrians are having problems walking along the street as the pavement is partly closed off.

Dave Lovett, 69, owner of Benfleet Glass, London Road said the disruption to business has been immense.

He said: "I know they have got to do the works but there must be a better and faster way.

"It means we have limited access to our business for customers and deliveries.

"Sometimes they are blocking us off."

A UK Power Networks spokesman said: "UK Power Networks engineers are working as quickly and safely as possible to complete essential repair work on an underground cable on Bread and Cheese Hill, Benfleet which powers the area. For safety reasons four-way traffic lights and safe pedestrian walkways are in place for this work.

"We appreciate the impact this is having and apologise for the inconvenience caused. We have spoken to the florist business to help resolve their concerns. We have a permit to complete this work by Tuesday September 18, but we aim to clear the site sooner if possible."
