Hundreds of people turned out to show their support and pay respects in memory of a woman who was killed.

A memorial walk was organised in memory of Tina Cantello, 49, who was on her way to the last of three door-to-door collection jobs when she disappeared.

Her body was found in a house about two miles from where her family believe she was last seen.

The mum-of-three, who worked as a debt collector for Provident, was a hugely popular figure in the community.

Friends Charlotte Randall and Cheryl Fedelmesi organised the memory walk which took place at 7pm on Friday.

Hundreds of people from Basildon and the surrounding community who either knew Tina or had been touched by the tragedy turned out to pay their respects and carry out Tina’s walk home.

The event started outside Tesco in Langdon Hills and travelled two miles to her house in Holst Avenue, Laindon, where pink flowers were laid and balloons were let off into the sky.

Cheryl said: “It was truly magical and the best outcome we could have hoped for. The support of the community was unbelievable and I will never be able to thank them enough.”

People took to social media to commend the community spirit which came out in force at the event.

Karen Barnes said: “I have to say I am bursting with pride having the opportunity to take part in such an event and take a beautiful spirit to her family. Well done to all involved - it was a total honour.”

Fiona Wood added: “Amazing turnout for an amazing women.

“So proud of the community all coming together to get Tina back home where she belongs with her family,

“A huge thank you to the lovely lady’s that organised this walk also.”

Anybody was welcome to join the walk and donations of £5 were accepted to help support the family at this difficult time.

In the wake of her death, a crowd funder was set up to support the family and it has now raised more than £7,000, smashing the original £1,000 target.
