A BASILDON club will stay open with a set of conditions placed on its licence after a hearing.

Unit 7, in Festival Leisure Park, faced a review by Basildon Council at the request of Mark Ellis, councillor for Laindon Park and Fryerns.

The call for review has come after Mr Ellis' son, Kane, 24, was injured at the club in December last year.

After the incident, he needed four stitches on his lower back.

The club insisted at the time that CCTV had shown he simply fell on a set of stairs, but during the review it emerged that Kane had been pushed into a mirror inside the club, causing the wound.

The review was conducted by Basildon Council on Wednesday, and a series of conditions were imposed on the club.

The conditions include mandatory searching on entry, a review of all the mirrors inside the club, and that all incidents are recorded internally, and reported to emergency services if necessary.

Unit 7 claim that police confirmed no crime took place, although the applicants representatives told the Echo that an assault charge was still being pursued.

A spokesman said: “We are delighted that justice has been served and the truth has come out. Unit 7 is a professionally run business and we are proud of our track record in Basildon, not only providing a great night out for young people, but creating vital jobs and income for the town.

"However, we are outraged that this review, which we believe was politically motivated and disproportionate and which makes a mockery of the licensing system, was allowed to get this far.

"We had clear evidence from the start that no stabbing had taken place and the police also confirmed no crime took place.

"The club acted professionally throughout, offering the highest standards of care to the injured party, and we even received an email of thanks from Kane Ellis’ mother.

"The Council also confirmed that there was no ‘catastrophic failure’ of the management of the club.

"Thankfully, we can now get on with doing what we do best; providing a safe and fun night out for our customers.”
