“Digital exclusion” is an emerging social problem for Britain... as almost one in ten adults have never used the internet before.
According to the Office for National Statistics adults aged 75 years and over had the highest rate of lapsed internet users at seven per cent, up from five per cent in 2016.
In 2014 the government launched the Digital Inclusion Strategy to ensure everyone has access to the internet and to be more digital-savvy.
Telecommunications giants have scrambled in a race to provide ultrafast public WiFi for customers to experience a new digital dimension where they can conveniently access services and apps without the troubles of hotspotting.
The UK has experienced ups and downs with its digital evolution. For example Virgin Media held off its public WiFi service in 2015 due to public concerns. O2 UK is working with IT company CISCO on a project to deliver free seamless WiFi to the City of London.
