TRADERS and residents in Hadleigh have launched a campaign to raise £3,000 for Christmas lights in the town centre.

The Hadleigh Community Group, which was created earlier this year by residents and businesses, hopes to raise enough money to buy and install the decorations for the festive season.

The group was formed last month following discussions about improving the appearance of the town centre.

Karen Knox, chairman of the group, said: “A number of residents discussed the lack of Christmas decorations across the town centre during the run-up to last Christmas via an online forum, so we decided to create our own group by inviting residents, councillors and local business owners.”

Darren Dukes, of Amos Estates, in London Road, and a member of the group, said: “We are just a group of local people who want to tidy up Hadleigh and make it look good.

“It would be nice to have Christmas lights up so that when people come through, there is something for them to see.

“If you drive through Hadleigh, it’s not the best looking town in the world, to be honest.

“Next year, we might think about putting up some flowers around the town but this year it is all about the Christmas lights.”

The community group will also host a garden fair and summer fair to help fund further improvements and activities for the community.

Castle Point MP Rebecca Harris said: “Congratulations to Karen and her committee who are a fabulous example of the community spirit which exists in Castle Point.

“The community group have identified improvements which they would like to see within their neighbourhood and instead of sitting back and complaining they have directed their energies into making a difference – which is great.

“As a Hadleigh resident I look forward to seeing the results of their efforts at Christmas time.”

So far, £570 has been raised.
