THE founder of a voluntary group launched to spruce up Canvey seafront has quit after growing tired of “political intrusion.”

John Webb set up Canvey Bay Watch three years ago after deciding he wanted to clear up Thorney Bay Beach.

Over the years, he and a dedicated group of 20 volunteers have completely renovated the beach area, which used to be completely run down.

They have painted the seawall, installed benches, disabled access and put down flower pots.

However, Mr Webb has grown increasingly frustrated with the planning process - which means he has to seek permission from Castle Point Council and the Environment Agency before he can progress with his ambitious plans.

He said: “It just got too political for me.

“I started it three years ago and we have a team of 20 volunteers who are all hard working.

“I didn’t set it up because I wanted any awards or recognition, but because I wanted to improve the beach area for the people of Canvey, because that is what they deserve. It was also frustrating trying to get permission from Castle Point Council and the Environment Agency to do anything.”

Mr Webb said this is slowing down progress.

He added that other members are following in his footsteps and leaving - but he hopes the group survives.

He said: “It is like your baby when you start something like this. You want to continue with it.

“I do have some good memories of working with the other volunteers over the years. We were a hard working group and went out in all weathers. I don’t think I missed a single Tuesday of volunteering on the seafront - I even went out on Christmas Eve.

“We had some good times and always went to the cafe afterwards to have a laugh. There was a good bit of banter between the volunteers.

“The beach used to be so run down, but I have had people coming up to me to say they are no longer going to move because of the work we have done and one lady said she had taken her house off the market because of the work we have done.”

Mr Webb hasn’t given up on volunteering on the island altogether - and said he is looking at a new project.
