BUDDING south Essex boxers could benefit from a new training gym.

It comes as land in Hardy Road, Basildon is earmarked as a potential home for a new facility complete with an office, spectator seating, changing rooms, a sauna room, a massage area, main gym and cardio room.

The opening hours of the gym would be similar to others in the area which is around 9am to 9pm.

Mr M Lockey, the developer aiming to bring the project forward, revealed that he is aiming to ensure people who work during the day can use the boxing hall facilities during the evening.

The gym will have four members of staff employed on site.

In its planning application, the developer wrote: “The proposed boxing hall would provide a shared community facility which residents and the community can use. The design and layout of the boxing hall has been planned in a modernised way that is sustainable, and retained for the benefit of the community.

“Moreover the site is within a central location, so it is easily accessible on foot and by bike, which reduces the need for a car.

“The proposal makes efficient use of land in a built-up area close to local shops, services and public transport.”

A final decision on the plans is due to be made by Basildon Council’s planning committee by July 4.

The plans come after a historic boxing club that helped train thousands of men since the end of World War Two, closed its doors.

Berry Amateur Boxing Club, based in Laindon and headed up by Ned Quirey, had more than 70 boxers on its books during its Nineties heyday.

But with dwindling members, the club was forced to fold in June last year, leaving Mr Quirey, head coach for 35 years, “heartbroken.”

The Echo reported last week that a gym in Basildon will offer classes from world champion Thai boxers.

Double K Muay Thai gym is now based inside the award-winning Ripped Gym, in Harvey Road, Basildon.

With a complete revamp, the 1700sq ft training camp comes complete with a raised boxing ring, seven bags and fully matted area.

Daily classes and private tuition for all abilities will be available with the world champions, and fully -qualified and highly-ranked instructors.

Main coaches Evan Jays, Paul Barber and Matt Wray will be on hand to teach new clients.
