A RENOWNED charity that saves tens of thousands of lives is looking for volunteers.

Basildon and Thurrock Samaritans, based in Little Lullaway, Basildon, is looking for compassionate people to join its ranks.

The charity offers people the chance to talk about any problems they face rather than have to deal with problems on their own.

A spokesman for the charity said: “There are so many ways to get involved with Basildon and Thurrock Samaritans.

As well as taking calls, we are looking for people to help with fundraising, publicity and other activities.”

The charity, which currently has about 100 active volunteers, is also on the lookout for fundraisers.

The spokesman added: “We are always on the lookout for amazing and enthusiastic people to help us fundraise.

“This could be in any way, from running a 5k race - or longer if you’re feeling ambitious - to holding a garden fete or a used book or clothing sale.”

Samaritans offer a 24-hour private support and advice line, it can be accessed by dialling 116 123 from any phone.

Trained volunteers can talk to callers about any issues.

Common reasons include relationship and family problems, anxiety and depression, loneliness, drug and alcohol use, and suicidal thoughts.
