VISITORS to a fort got a unique opportunity to witness the spectacle of a regimental training day.

Onlookers at Tilbury Fort got the chance to watch the 44th East Essex Regiment train.

The living history and re-enactment group, which represents one of the famous British Army Regiments of the early 19th Century were dressed in full re-enactment attire.

Excited guests got to see the group take part in parade training and marching, battle techniques such as formations and musket firing.

There was also a chance to meet and talk to the group to learn about Napoleonic history, as well as exploring the site which has protected London’s seaward approach from the 16th century through to the Second World War.

More recently, the site has also acted as the backdrop to the BBC1 series, Taboo.

Dan Collard, English Heritage’s property manager at Tilbury Fort, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the 44th East Essex Regiment back to Tilbury Fort for their regimental training day. Watching the group training is always a great spectacle which our visitors really enjoy.

Henry VIII built the first fort at Tilbury and it was there that Queen Elizabeth I famously rallied her army nearby to face the threat of the Armada. Today the fort is a great example of its type in England, with its circuit of moats and bastioned outworks.
