PLANS to build a mini estate on former sheltered housing and garages have been backed.

Basildon Council planning bosses are supporting a scheme to transform former sheltered houses and garages in Roman Way, Billericay, which have stood empty since 2010, into 15 new houses.

The proposal aims to replace the “eyesore” homes, and make nine available for affordable housing in conjunction with the council.

The site will have also have a new access road.

Ahead of a planning meeting on Tuesday, January 24, council officers have recommended the proposal is rubber-stamped, before the final vote takes place.

Stuart Spiers, principal planning officer at the council, outlined the reasons for the council backing, adding that it will help to create extra parking for neighbouring Billericay School.”

He said: “The design and siting of the proposal has been assessed, and in the context of the particular characteristics of the site and surrounding area. The design of the proposed dwellings is considered acceptable.

“It ensures that no material detriment to the living conditions of nearby residential occupiers would result.

“The scheme includes sufficient levels of parking for the occupiers of the new dwellings and provides additional coach parking for Billericay School without detriment to highway safety. The mix includes an appropriate provision of affordable housing in accordance with current policy.”
