TWO firefighters who became a laughing stock after accidentally placing a £5 bet on Leicester City FC to win the Premier League may soon have the last laugh...by bagging £10,000 each!

Pals Jordan Wright and Mitchell Baldock couldn’t believe their eyes when they got odds of 2,000/1 back in August for what they thought was Leicester to win their opening game of the season against Sunderland.

They presumed bookmaker Betfred had made a mistake with their odds so they each rushed to put a fiver on.

However, they soon realised their gaffe and became the butt of the jokes at work.

Now though they could well have the last laugh, with the midlands-based team five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea fan Jordan, 23, from Stanford-le-Hope, said: “I’d never been into betting in my life, but I thought 2,000/1 for them to beat Sunderland must’ve been a mistake. So I phoned Mitchell to tell him.

“Everyone has been telling us all along that Leicester haven’t got a chance, but they just keep on winning, so now we’ll see!”

The firefighter, based at Plaistow, added: “What surprised me was the bookie only let us put a fiver each on.

“Everyone in the brigade is aware of what happened and our likely £10,000 windfalls… and all because basically I made a mistake.”

Mitchell, 25, who lives in Grays, is an Arsenal fan whose team face Leicester on Sunday in a top of the table clash.

As much as he loves his team, he’ll be rooting for the Foxes when they meet...

He said: “I’m already off to Vegas on holiday soon so if Leicester do become champions I will have plenty of spending money.

“We’re watching all the results now of course with Leicester having only 13 games to go.

“Ideally at the end of the season the top three would be Leicester first with Arsenal second - and ahead of Tottenham. That would make me very, very happy.”

Betfred boss Fred Done said the bookmaker stand to lose more than £1 million if Leicester pull off the most unlikely title win in English football history.

He said: “Mitchell and Jordan are among the hundreds off Betfred customers who are set to be taking my money and ruining my holidays.

“Along with their fire brigade chums they might think this is funny, but you can rest assured that is not how I would describe their good fortune...”

Current odds for the Premier League title:

Arsenal 2/1

Leicester 9/4

Man City 10/3

Tottenham 9/2
