IN 1941, the Clyde provided the base for a daring Allied raid on Nazi- occupied Norway.

Launched in September 1941, the raid, codenamed Operation Gauntlet, was designed to destroy the island of Spitzbergen's rich coal mines, together with associated equipment and stores before they fell into German hands.

Needless to say the locals weren't keen to hang about to face the wrath of their invaders and these Boy Scouts, along with 800 fellow islanders, were evacuated to Scotland where they found a warm welcome waiting.
