AROUND 12% of parents admit their literacy skills let them down when reading a bedtime story to their kids.
Nearly 25% confess to making up words or leaving some out altogether to get a story finished quickly.
Despite the problems faced by some, 75% of parents quizzed said they attempt to read a story to their children at bedtime.
The new research by skills provider learndirect also found that one in three parents finds it difficult to help young kids with maths homework.
Learndirect is launching a new children's book called Where Did The River Go?, which has maths and English puzzles for adults to gauge their skills levels while children enjoy the story.
