Rival football team pitches up in Southend High Street

First published in News by

FOOTBALL fans are gearing up for a new addition to Southend High Street – a Tottenham Hotspur club shop.

The pop-up store, selling Spurs’ merchandise, will open on Saturday, opposite Specsavers, and continue until January 31.

The Premier League giants, who also kick off their season on Saturday, claim they have a high number of supporters in Southend, hence the need for the store.

A spokesman for the North London club said: “Our membership database shows we have a high number of fans concentrated in the area, so the store allows them to shop closer to home.

“The store will offer a wide range of our merchandise, as well as shirt printing.

“We will be open until January 31, but have an option to extend.”

The store, creating six jobs, will be the second Spurs store in Essex, with the club having a unit in Harlow.

However, a club shop in Chelmsford closed last year.

The club, which boasts stars such as France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, £30million Argentinian Erik Lamela, and Spain’s Roberto Soldado, kicks off its season away to rivals West Ham on Saturday.

Spurs also have stores at their White Hart Lane stadium, and in Enfield and Stevenage.

Southend Council leader, Independent Ron Woodley, is a Spurs fan.

He said: “I used to have a season ticket for Spurs in the early Nineties.

“It does surprise me they’re opening a store here as their supporters locally seem to be few and far between.

“I think it’ll be a good addition to the High Street, but I must apologise to West Ham fans.”

Neither the Blues of Southend United nor West Ham – the teams with apparently the biggest following in the area – have stores in the town centre.

Spurs fans welcomed the news.

Luke Baker, 18, of Canvey, said: “I know where I’ll be on Saturday.

“It’ll be good to have a shop in South East Essex as I believe there’s just the other one in Harlow and it will open up job opportunities.”

Wendy Mayle, from Basildon, said: “It’s brilliant news, as I used to go to Chelmsford, but they closed it.

“I had to go all the way to Harlow last week to get my son’s new away kit.

“I will definitely be visiting the shop in Southend.

In Southend i would say West Ham / Southend are the most popular and to be fair I would say the y ids are second.

Regardless I have seen many images on twitter of people p issing on it & I say thats the way forward. They are taking liberties and feelings should be made clear on the way back from night clubs in the early hours. Whoever gets the glazing contract will be kept busy.

Ron Woodley says he welcomes this shop, says he is a Spurs supporter and also apologises to West Ham fans. What about apologising to SOUTHEND UNITED fans? This guy is the leader of Southend Council and yet is keener to promote and sympathise with London based businesses. It's a disgrace, in his role he should be promoting this town and all of its assets. This includes the local football club which has been a major part of the town since 1907. We really need more people with some local pride in our key Council roles.

Like many others I am completely baffled by Cllr Woodley's comments about apologising to West Ham fans. What on earth has it got to do with them. The shop is located in the Borough of Southend which has its own team in the football league!

I find his comments disrespectful about one of the few businesses that raises the profile of the Borough of Southend in the national media on a regular basis.

A politician who makes such ignorant comments does not deserve the privilege of representing the citizens of Southend. Voters in his ward, do your stuff and vote him out next time you have the chance!

For those saying the shop won't last 12 months - You're right! It's a POP-UP shop intended to last until January 2015.

If you don't like what the shops got to sell, don't go in. Is it that hard?
Surely having any store in a vacant space is better then none, think of the jobs (all be it temporary). The money will be going to local folk!!

You really should have made a comment (apology) on this one Ron.

When you look back after you get voted out, this will be one of those moments that you should have dealt with more professionally.

Also, admitting you support spurs has just lost you about 37% of the Thorpe bay vote. Never mind everywhere else.
