Fantasy football: Southend couple create back yard boozer to enjoy World Cup in style
IT HAS a fully-stocked bar, a slot machine, juke box and dart board...the perfect place to join friends to soak up the dramas of the World Cup.
Few would disagree that it looks like the perfect backstreet boozer.
But in fact, the pub – called the Bullseye – is in a converted shed in a back garden in Stadium Way, Southend.
Vicky Irvine and Steve Tidd spent £2,000 on the pub, which was finished last October and furnished with finds from eBay.
It can accommodate about 20 people and includes a bar, pool table, dart board, 42 inch plasma television and electronic juke box.
The Bullseye has already played host to a New Year’s Eve party for their friends, birthday parties and Saturday’s Carl Froch v George Groves boxing bout, but is now gearing up for the month-long celebration of the beautiful game.
Vicky, 30, a teacher at South Essex College, said: “We were lying in our hot tub one day last year, looking at the empty space at the bottom of the garden, and wondered what we could put there.
“I saw a competition online for the best garden shed and it inspired us.
“It’s not that big considering what we’ve got in there, but we’ve gone the whole hog and even have a fake licence plaque above the door.”
The Bullseye is decorated in the style of a traditional English pub, with wood panelling around the bottom of the walls and bold print wallpaper and carpet more reminiscent of the Queen Vic than a potting shed.
It has been entered in the competition, the winner of which will go into a grand finale against other category winners with the chance of featuring on Channel 4 show George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and a £1,000 prize.
Vicky added: “There are so many amazing entries in the competition that even if we won the pub shed category I don’t think we’d win overall.
“We’re getting a lot of attention though and we’ve even twinned the Bullseye with a guy in California who built his own pub in his back yard, called Billy Kahooka’s.”
