LEIGH Infant School has been rated outstanding by Ofsted inspectors.

The school has retained its top rating in all areas.

Inspectors described headteacher Pauline Lucas and the school’s governors as “relentless” in their drive to ensure all pupils succeed.

The school was praised for overall effectiveness, pupil achievement, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, as well as leadership and management.

Inspectors found by the time they leave, pupils’ attainment in reading, writing and mathematics is significantly higher than that found nationally and behaviour is exemplary. Mrs Lucas said: “Clearly, I’m absolutely delighted with the outcome.

“The lead inspector said the love of learning in this school is tangible, so I’m proud we have a happy, hard-working, harmonious staff team, seeking the very best for every child.

“We have very high expectations of our pupils, both academically and socially, and a strong commitment to ensuring every one fulfils their potential.”

Recognised for her achievements, Mrs Lucas has taken charge of neighbouring school Leigh North Street Junior School, which in May was placed in special measures.

She is the executive headteacher overseeing the improvements.

In an Ofsted monitoring report in July, inspectors said: “Since your appointment, you have gained the confidence of the parents, staff and pupils. Your expectations of staff are high and you are evaluating the quality of teaching effectively.”

Southend councillor responsible for Children and Learning, James Courtenay said: “This is a tremendous outcome for Leigh Infant School and I congratulate everyone’s magnificent contribution.

“It’s exceptionally rare for a school to gain an outstanding rating in every single category, so this is an especially remarkable achievement.

“There are very dedicated school staff and governors working in our borough, so it’s terrific to see these qualities recognised nationally.”
