Westcliff jeweller's diamond heist
6:00am Thursday 10th October 2013 in News
A DIAMOND haul, worth more than £15,000, was stolen from a Westcliff jewellers in an early morning raid yesterday.
Crooks took diamond rings and pendants from Aaron Lyons Goldsmiths in a quick-fire raid.
They broke into the back of the shop, in Hamlet Court Road, at about 12.35am.
The business’s alarm was triggered, causing police and the owner to be on the scene within minutes, but there was already no sign of the raiders.
Owner Aaron Lyons, 33, said: “It was a horrible thing to come out to.
“They’ve stolen jewellery that was in the display cabinet and a few bits from the workshop, some of which were very valuable.”
Although he hadn’t finished totting up the damage when he spoke to the Echo yesterday, he believed about 30 items had been taken and provisionally estimated they could be worth upwards of £15,000.
He added: “They were in and out very quickly, and there were quite a few things they were close to and missed, but they just seemed to want some of them.
“I’m so sad about this. We’ve been here eight years and we’ve never had any problems before.
Local people have been so good to us. I just feel a bit let down, really.”
Police want to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area or who may be offered a diamond ring in dubious circumstances.
Investigating officer Det Sgt Andy Copley said: “It’s likely that quite a lot of noise was caused in forcing entry to this jewellers, so I’m hoping that there might be witnesses out there who heard the commotion or saw someone fleeing the scene.
“I’d also like to warn other jewellers in the area about this break-in and advise them to step up their security.”
