March honours war heroes
CHELSEA Pensioners and retired Gurkhas were among veterans taking part in a parade to honour the British Armed Forces.
Veteran soldiers and air cadets marched through Southend from the Naval and Military Club, in Royal Terrace, to St John’s Church, in Church Road.
Kay Ward, who is a warden at the church, said: “It was excellent. The atmosphere was wonderful.”
The parade marked the anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day, but veterans of the Korean War were heavily involved too as 2013 is the 60th anniversary of the end of the conflict.
Korean War veterans read the Ode of Remembrance and gave readings at the church service.
The 1312 Air Training Corp Band led the parade, which featured 12 standards.
