Firefighters tackle Southend fire
5:24pm Thursday 21st March 2013 in News
FIREFIGHTERS were called a blaze on the 11th floor of a tower of flats after a boiler exploded.
The top of Chichester Road was closed off at rush hour last night and 35 firefighters were scrambled to the block of flats at about 4.50pm.
It is understood that a boiler explosion caused the fire, but there were no injuries and the fire was quelled by 5.30pm.
Peter Bennett, the fire officer in charge at the scene, said: “People will question why we’ve got so many engines down here and have closed the road and a bus route, but there was a real potential for disaster here."
He added that nobody had to be evacuated from the tower of flats.
