Long-dormant town square cafe may finally open (From Southend Standard)

I'll believe it when I see it.

Summer on it's way - really! Only if you count scraping half an inch of ice from the windscreen typical summer weather I suppose!

I thought this 'thing' was supposed to win design awards, take this kiosk as an example and apply it to ever future council proposal and capital spending scheme and consider how the council is burning 'your' money on their (or their friends) unworkable and unrealistic ideas...

It looks like irregular slabs of glass that have been stuck together with black gaffer tape. how many MILLIONS where wasted on this project...

Err, this is the cafe that cost a fortune - OUR MONEY btw, not the Council's. The opening petal roof doesn't and never will work, and the original tenant was a Chinese takeaway, who stored boxes in there as the place was unusable.

So, Cllr Moring. Have you: sought to reclaim costs from the original architect and manufacturer? Have you investigated the officers who passed this as fit for purpose? We should be told!

A number? Why can't they say how many? Zero is a number, and not an unlikely one in this case.

Wonder how many affordable homes couldve been constructed instead of this embarassment of a botched greenhouse.

It's completely not fit for purpose (that goes for the Council aswell!)

Can anyone remember anything in recent history that the council was involved in that wasnt a failure?

Convert it into an enormous grit bin, in readiness for next winter.

by the looks of the picture it's envelopped in fog! not very summery looking to me. I also doubt it will be full of tourists - they come for adventure island and the seafront, not Warrior Square. Play on the benefits of the area - i.e. it's an ideal place for town workers to eat their lunch. A sandwich shop / ice cream parlour would make good sense.

I've long thought they needed a permanent police patrol in the area to finally stamp out the hideous trend of sexual assaults that seem to take place in and around Warrior Square.

There it is, a lovely green area, a place where families should be picnicking and dogs should be chasing frisbees and whatnot, and yet people still know it as 'Rape Square'.

I had hoped that the revamp would improve the situation, but lo and behold, upon walking home from work last year, it was taped off, there were cops everywhere and another foul perversion had been committed.

To be frank, the situation is intolerable.
It is a nice area in the heart of our commercial district. We cannot allow either drug dealers or the homeless or sexual predators to sully it.

Before the council start to rub their hands with glee they need to hang their heads in shame. Firstly to allow so much money to be spent on this building in the first place, money that will take forever to recoup from rents. Secondly to allow the architect, constructors and council officers who passed the finished building as complete and fit for use, to get away with providing a facility that is NOT what was paid for. Why have these people not been held to account and, in the case of constuctors/architec
ts, not been fined and refunds obtained for shoddy design/workmanship?

Do you know, if my euro millions numbers come up tomorrow, i'd make the council an offer they couldnt refuse and then bulldoze it and provide a classy brick built pavillion overlooking the square for the boroughs residents (Cabinet members excluded) to use and be proud of.

Whats the betting this would come in at under half what the council spent on that ridiculous wonky greenhouse.

Warrior Square is yet another missed opportunity, it could have been turned into a proper town square, instead of the deserted patch of grass that it is.

It was paid for by The Homes & Communities Agency, NOT Southend Council and it was a Renaissance Southend scheme.

Let's not also forget the "marvels of modern construction" that have been costing council tax payers a fortune that are the arches under Pier Hill, also built defectively with structural problems.

Complete and utter and EXPENSIVE inefficiency is what we get from Southend Council. Why on EARTH do taxpayers have to keep footing the bill for the inefficient way our money is spent? Do they not get building works checked properly before they are "signed off"? If they do, then why doesn't insurance cover these defects? All the time these places stand empty it is money lost which could be going towards Council-run services.

If Council members had a bit more intelligence and business-sense they would be able to afford to keep care homes open for the elderly and other services for residents.

Anyone been stuck in the lift down from Pier HIll recently (faulty workmanship there too, allegedly...)

It was a sponsored thing for the son of one of the guys on my team, plan was to skate between three sites but as the legs went East-West as soon as I stood up it was knocked on the head and I ended up in the stocks! with cold wet sponges lobbed at me, the cheeky g!ts called round the other sites and they all came to chuck sponges! ended up with a dozen buckets of water over my head.

it was worth it as we rised £1800 and manflu!

Warrior Square was always a long odds bet by the council. I don't object to the council trying, but this I'm afraid is a fiasco of the first order. They can't even get the thing waterproof.

Cafe faces away from high street thus is it open or not?
Plus coffee shops are aplenty,but with this cafe ..no seats so you wander around druggie sq holding on your latte watching out for the unhinged.
