Southend Airshow campaigners hope to put on event themselves

CAMPAIGNERS who got more than 15,000 “likes” for a Facebook page calling for Southend Airshow to be saved hope to put on the event themselves.

Southend Council voted to scrap the airshow to save £130,000 but the campaigners hope to bring it back next year by funding it themselves.

Thomas Curtis, 29, of Honiton Road, Southend, said: “The Campaign is now focused on bringing the airshow back in 2014. Look what we have achieved in just six weeks. Imagine what we could do with a full year."

John Delaney, 52, of Chesterfield Crescent, Eastwood, said: “We are totally committed to not seeing it die forever so “plan B" is to get it back for 2014 bigger, better and with more involvement from the community, pushing the council to reinstate it.”

The newly formed Save Southend Airshow committee hope to raise the cash but ask the council, which has years of experience putting on the event, to organise it and book the aircraft.

The committee is yet to decide how to raise the cash, but ideas include setting up a “Friends of Southend Airshow” group that charges a membership fee, finding firms to sponsor the event and fundraising events.

I wish you all the best i really do.

Southend Council has failed the community here (again!).

But do you think for one minute Southend Council will be anything but obstructive in your endeavours?

I'm guessing they will not want you to succeed, and will make it as difficult and as bureaucratic as humanly possible.

The last thing Southend Council would want is for it to be a success without their meddling!

The way things are going, by 2014 Southend Airport will be close to full capacity. As they are looking to take control of local airspace you will probably need their permission.

Southend Population - 175,000
Facebook likes - 15,000
Total - 9%

I know not everyone has facebook, but even so with only 9% of the locals wanting to save it, it´s no wonder it´s going to be scrapped.

Seeing as most people in Southend are old fogeys with no idea what a computer is, that's hardly a surprise.

The Airshow attracted people from all over mid and south Essex - if you take these populations into account - it's considerably lower.

The only way I can see of raising the money to stage it will be to get a sponsor in.

Good for them. Any donations they get MUST be recorded so they can refund donors if it doesn't materialise.

And why shouldn't they dream? Or hope? Or actually get off their backsides and work for something they want?

If it fails, then at least they tried for what they wanted. If it works... Bonus.

Why is it necessary to belittle and insult anyone that tries to make a difference?

Best of luck to them, it's a great idea. As the Council has been useless at getting decent sponsorship maybe, just maybe, individuals working on behalf of the actual Airshow instead of trying to further their own grandiosity might have more success in getting businesses involved.

As for the perpetual knockers....sad, pessimistic people. Must be horrible to have your glass half-empty all your life!

Mmmmm perpetual Knockers...Mmmm yes please......

yes we should wish them luck, its a brave thing to tackle.
