A DAUGHTER is taking part in a memory walk in honour of her late parents.

Clare Bricknell will be taking part in the Havens to Havens Walk with her husband Phil and brothers Mick and Phil Scotton in memory of her mum, Val and dad, Alan.

It takes place on Sunday April 7at 11am and begins and ends at Little Havens Hospice in Thundersley.

Alan fought lung cancer for years and despite having half a lung removed and radiotherapy treatment, worked as a gardener right up until his death in 1996, aged 65.

Fourteen years later, in 2010, his widow Val, 76, was diagnosed with mouth cancer. The family was given the heartbreaking news that the disease had spread too far for treatment, leaving them to plan to make Val’s final weeks as comfortable as possible.

They contacted Fair Havens Hospice at Home service, whose specialist nurses provide end-of-life care in the comfort of people’s homes.

Clare said, “The nurses were absolute angels, taking the time to give us breaks during the day and sitting with mum during the night so that we could sleep.

“Without the support from them, we would never have known that mum was in her final hours.

“When the time came, the nurse called us all together and gave us the opportunity to say goodbye to mum. We sat with her all night and in the morning, mum slipped away peacefully with the three of us by her side.”

Val died on February 21, 2011, only ten weeks after diagnosis.

Clare added: “We felt that taking part in the Havens to Havens walk would be a perfect opportunity to walk together, whilst remembering mum and dad and raising money for a charity that is very close to our hearts.”

Clare and her family has raised £150 so far. To sponsor them visit http://www.justgiving.com/Scotton-family

Tickets for the Havens to Havens walk are £8 for adults and £4 for children which includes a special dedication panel for the wall of memories, event bag, cream tea and medal for taking part.
