MORE than 60 people will brave freezing temperatures when they sleep rough tomorrow night, so others won’t have to.

Temperatures could drop to zero as volunteers spend the night in the car park of Southend YMCA with only a sleeping bag and a cardboard box to protect them to raise money for the charity, which tries to prevent vulnerable youngsters becoming homeless.

Tom Moulton, of Southend YMCA, said: “For the majority if not all of the people taking part it’s going to be a new experience.

“Everybody understands it’s going to be cold, but the whole community spirit of it and strangers supporting each other will help everyone through it.”

The sponsored sleep-out will run from 7pm tomorrow to 7am on Sunday at the centre in Ambleside Drive.

No rain is forecast, but if the weather gets bad volunteers can sleep inside – but Mr Moulton expects some hardy participants to stay out whatever the conditions.

Echo reporters Jack Monroe and David Trayner will be among those taking part.
