Single-mum-of-eight tries to get off benefits...but is scuppered by thieves
A SINGLE mum-of-eight turned her back on benefits and set up her own business...only for thieves to ruin it.
Naomi Woods, 40, saved up for months to buy a burger van, then it was stolen from a rented lock-up in Maldon Road, Southend.
Naomi had been out of work for 15 years but decided to take up night shifts at ASDA, in Shoebury, last November.
She saved up £2,000 over three months before sbuying the business last month. But now she is back to square one as she was still saving up to insure the van.
Devastated Ms Woods said: “It’s so frustrating. I feel like I’ve worked for months for nothing, all my wages since November have been for nothing.”
She was also worried about proposed cuts to benefits which are set to kick in this spring.
She said: “I wanted to work, but I’ve got no choice but to work because of the benefit cuts coming in this April, I wouldn’t survive.
“I wanted to get in early and get a job before everyone was out there trying to get a job, plus my youngest starts school in September.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101.

Well done Naomi for trying to start your own business. I hope the van and thieves are found and you can get back on track soon.

Paper of the year, more like comic of the year.
I have nothing against this Lady but that fact is she saved up £2000 in 8 weeks & that clearly shows benefit payments are to high.
"but I’ve got no choice but to work because of the benefit cuts coming in this April"
I that sums up was so many are moaning. They are being forced to earn their own way.

Although as Jon Austin won in his categories over others, maybe they are.
Anyway, She saved up £2,000 of her wages. As soon as she went back to work, her benefits would have been cut back to a minimum, depending on what she was earning.
If she's scrimped and saved to start her own business, then I seriously hope the thieves are caught, and the van returned. If only others were this determined.

None of this detracts from the point that whatever the circumstances I hope the thieving oiks a caught and the van recovered.

The Evening Echo is actually a decent news paper always has been imo(those that always complain why even bother to read it on here) and i used to deliver it as a lad even earning up to £7 a week on a very very good week with tips(yes it was many moons ago), a good learning curve collecting weekly payments, sorting out your own wages and cashing up on a Friday round the local reps house. anyway...Burgers.
It was good many moons ago, I remember it, and I used to deliver its free spin off, the Standard Recorder (in the day when it was around 70 odd pages, not 16!). Unfortunately standards seem to have slipped. Work is not being proofed, and silly mistakes creep through. In addition, the sensationalist headlines and 'scoops' should be reserved for a tabloid, not a local paper.

I can see an investigation over this, afterall has she been working cash in hand, and claiming? I think so, which is one of the reasons the government, has drawn up these massive changes to the whole benefit issue..

To be honest I'm surprised they haven't covered it already - it was made known by Murphy about a fortnight ago, certainly something I'd expect to see in a local award winning paper - local news that benefits residents by warning them of impending delays, giving enough time to find alternative routes.
The closures start on Sunday, with the London-bound exit slip closed for 4 weeks, 24/7. If they don't run a warning story, what's the bet they'll run one along the lines of 'moaning motorists complain about roadwork delays'...
They've been told!

It's called 'family planning' for a reason Naomi.
It's very irresponsible to both your family and the state.
I also find it very surprising you are able to save £2000 in just three months whilst being a single parent having to support eight offspring either whilst on benefits or in low paid supermarket employment.
(What your secret? I'm earning an above average salary and wouldnt be able to amass such a windfall so rapidly?)
It's funny isnt it, when people are threatened with a benefit cut, they are suddenly able to find employment/income.

Still, it exposes the negative posters for what they are, small-mined, prejudiced, and bigoted towards anyone with less than they have.

You dont have 8 children unless you are in a financially viable position to support them. It's called 'family planning' for a reason Naomi. It's very irresponsible to both your family and the state. So Naiomi could quite happily have lived on that. Instead, she's saved some money (it doesn't say in the story it was her wages, it was probably her income in general), to get herself her own business.

Perhaps she is hoping some kind soul will offer to lend her hand, hard luck story, kind hearts and all that!
Perhaps the best person to help support her family might be the father of her eight children/

Most poor, unemployed and low paid people want only to better themselves (through work or education), rather than be trapped by benefits that keep them in poverty, What we need is more encouragement of the commendable entrepreneurial spirit she has shown rather than a smear campaign. However as a low paid worker myself I wish my taxes had been spent on infrastructure/ education / nhs etc, rather than a 15 year scrounger like her. You cannot get away from the fact that she has had 8 (yes eight!!) children whilst receiving benefit and she has said she is only coming off those benefits due to the looming benefit cap. Champagne Scocialists have destroyed this once great country with their simpering and interfering views and their need to start 2 illegal wars whilst smearing anyone that doesn't share their view. Get over yourself and stop labelling people as bigots or racists. Left wing fascism is STILL fascism.

It just seems that almost every story we hear is people bleating because things are not going their way. Of course it’s wrong that the van was stolen, nobody is condoning that but why not just go to the paper with the stolen van story. By presumably looking for the sympathy vote, this woman has exposed herself to untold criticism from the hard working tax payer. She has stated quite clearly that she only bought the van as her benefits she had been claiming for 15 years would be cut. And again, without wishing to be judgmental as I don’t know her, why eight children if she can not support them without benefits. (I know everybody is entitled to child benefit before you jump on that one.) Finally, as a number of posters have already stated, how has she managed to save £2000 in three months. My partner, like somebody else has already said earns what we think is an above average wage, we have a modest semi, a ten year old car and get nowhere near that level of saving. So carry on posting your opinion that you are entitled like the rest of us without the name calling

Journalists have clever ways of arranging a story to get more readers after all.
I remember a release I worked with once, from the AA, that stated that 42% of drivers who had been sent on speed reduction courses in the last 5 years had reduced their speed when driving. It was written to herald that they were working, that people were taking note, that it was all worthwhile...
I disregarded the rest of the press release, and wrote how the courses were failing as 58% of those who attended were still speeding.
All she might have said was ' I bought the van to start a business as I didn't want to stay on benefits' - reporter smells better story than ' burger van stolen' and goes for the kill.

Well I suppose we are sort of on the same track. My point in this and every other post is that people either speculate or simply impose their own views regardless of any facts. We can only comment on what has been written and not what we think the reporter may have been thinking for a particular slant.
