Man cleared of intentionally stabbing his brother-in-law

A MAN who stabbed his brother-in-law has been cleared of maliciously, or intentionally, wounding him.

Chikjoke Onwuemena, 28, admitted kniving Robert Campbell, 26, but maintained it was in self-defence after claiming he feared for his life as his brother-in-law grabbed him around the neck.

He wept as a jury, at Basildon Crown Court, unanimously found him not guilty of wounding with intent and malicious wounding.

Speaking after the trial, Mr Onwuemena, of Anerely Road, Westcliff, said: “I’m delighted with the result and I would now like to move on with my life and put it all behind me.”

During the trial, Mr Onwuemena said he stabbed Mr Campbell, from Colchester, twice with an object from his kitchen, but claimed it was in self defence as he was being choked.

He recalled how he grasped for a “spoon or a fork” to “jab” Mr Campbell, and only realised later that it was a knife on July 21.
