Thief jailed for stealing poppy tins on Remembrance Sunday

A THIEF has been jailed for stealing three poppy collection tins on Remembrance Sunday.

Iulia Olteanu, 31, who was finally caught following an appeal in the Echo, has been sentenced to 84 days in prison.

She had been operating with another man, believed to be Liviu Ghitoi, who is still wanted by police.

Within the space of one hour and 15 minutes thefts were committed at three shops in Rochford and Hockley, on November 11 last year.

The Costcutter in Main Road, Hockley, was first hit at 1.20pm after the cashier was distracted by a man, believed to be Ghitoi, 22, who came into the store.

The next theft happened at about 2pm at the Spar in West Street, Rochord, and then finally at Sanders food and wine shop, Ashingdon Road, Rochford, at 2.30pm.

Olteanu of Fanshawe Avenue, Barking, appeared before Southend Magistrates Court where she pleaded guilty to three counts of theft. She also admitted failing to answer bail on December 28.

Peter Wood, owner of Costcutter, in Hockley, said it was “fantastic news” she had been caught.

Essex Police are still hunting for Liviu Ghitoi whose last known address was in Barking, East London.

I would like an approximation of how much money was stolen please, why cant you tell us this information? surely it was covered at the court hearing.

I think the sentence is about right if it was a first offence, although I'm slightly confused as I thought Echo did not name & shame people sentenced to less than 3 years in prison ?

Its good to see a custodial sentence, she would have been let off with this in the past.

excellent news, the echo placed their mugshots online and in the paper months back as they was wanted in connection with the thefts(even naming them i recall).,..., and its great to get a follow up on this one with a good end result, now just to track down the Git.
but feel sorry for the unlucky person sharing a cell with her, enough to give you nightmares. 31 more like 59.

So very true !

I feel the amount stolen should have little or no bearing on the sentence in this case. I doubt they would have had any way of knowing how much was in the collection boxes. I feel the sentence is a lenient one. First offence ? Not likely !

Outrageous! She should be strapped to the Cenotaph, then whipped within an inch of her life!
Then send her back to Jonnyforeignerland or wherever she came from. Then we must stop all immigration and evict all foreigners! (The latter will assist greatly in closing down and privatising the NHS).

Unlikely, they were presumably sealed tins, so who would know.
Not sure why it's so important.
It's just good that a custodial sentance was passed

@supermadmax, what? How on earth could anybody possibly know how much was inside? People put coins in it and its not until its opened & counted that anybody would know. Her mugshot was released within days of the box being stolen so i would guess she has been arrested before, she is a romanian criminal here in the UK to commit crime, if you think basically a month inside is a decent sentence you need your head looking at

The sentance should be,replace a front line soldier,and walk ahead of the patrol to detect any roadside bombs.But of course that would be justice and we dont do justice in this country,thats why they flock here.
