Tourists and locals would be sad to see Leigh cockle shed go

TOURISTS and locals fear the demolition of a family-run cockle shed to make way for a cafe will be a blow to Old Leigh’s heritage.

The Peterboat Inn in Old Leigh has applied to knock down the Ivy Osborne Cockle Shed in its car park and beer garden to build its own cafe and shellfish stall.

But customers of the stall, which has been run by a traditional fishing family for 75 years, were outraged by the pub’s proposals.

Marketing executive Ray Morgan, 28, of Highcliffe Drive, Leigh, said: “I think it’s really sad that somewhere that’s been there for so long is being ousted in favour of a cafe, because Leigh’s got too much of that, it’s overrun with cafes.

“Why push something out that’s a success in favour of a faddy cafe?”

Jo Overfield, 33, also of Leigh, said: “It’s part of the Old Leigh heritage and I think local people value that and I think it’s really important.

“We’ve got to keep it Old Leigh.”

Owner of the Peterboat, the East Anglia Pub Company has had permission to build a cafe on the site for more than two years, but has leased the area to Ivy Osborne. However, it has now applied to extend the permission and submitted a design for a smaller cafe with the family, who have worked in the town’s fishing industry for more than 180 years, being sent a provisional notice to quit.

Vistors to the area also fear Leigh will lose its attraction with the loss of its original businesses.

Claire Baess, 42, a full-time mother from Hertfordshire, said: “I come down here firstly to see people and secondly for the prawns.

“I think it’s horrible because this is a business which has been passed down from generation to generation. I really like Leigh and it’s a shame to see this happen.”

Sally Miller, 37, visiting from Shoebury Road, Thorpe Bay, added: “It’s kind of sad really, and losing a bit of what Leigh’s about.

“I’ve just come down to have some prawns myself. We don’t want it to be all cafes.”

I thought the existing building was also a cafe anyway.

What relation is Ivy to the rest of the Osborne family, who have the
cockle business ?

People in Leigh are snobby and deserve to have their heritage destroyed.
For too long they have looked down their nose at us Southenders, citing their history and their shabby little fish-gutting huts as signs of their superiority.
Nothing will give me greater joy than to see the entirety of your backwards mudhole paved into a carpark and council estate.
Who knows? If we're lucky, people will stop even calling it 'Leigh' - forever ending the sense of entitlement and snobbery that is a prerequisite for living there.
Horrible people, a horrible place and no great loss to humanity if it all gets bulldozed.

Small businesses owned by individuals and families will soon be a thing only read about in history books.
Great Britain is not far from being a country owned and run entirely by banks and large corporations. If small businesses are not being ousted by large corporations, then the banks will normally ensure they cannot afford to survive, anyway.

Inferior? To what? A community comprised entirely of withered octogenarians? A few fishing sheds? Cobbled streets?
Tell me, what precisely have we in Southend got to feel inferior about when it comes to Leigh?
They and their pathetic, infantile superiority complex need to go far, far away. Far away to whatever rock they crawled out from under.
There perhaps they will have time to muse upon the true worth of their little cobblestones and their piffling fishing boats.
Only when the entirety of Leigh is bulldozed and converted into flats and office blocks will we have peace from their incessant prattling and malcontent. I just hope I live long enough to see the smirks wiped from their faces when their homes are paved over to make way for Tesco #6. Ha. Ha. Ha.

I was down at Leigh last week, for the first time in years.
There was only one of the Cockle sheds open. The Estuary Fish Merchants.

i feel sorry for you. you feel inferior because you have to concern yourself with others and you clearly are upset with others rather than concentrating on your own life and health.where did the inferiority complex come from. .your even laughing at your own comments.. sorry cant continue with the discussion you really do need to get some help....not that i have anything against the people of southend or the place but if there is one reason not to live there its because i may end up living next door to you..which would certainly be very unfortunate indeed.....

Come now, I'm not wholly without heart.
The people of Leigh have their better qualities too.
For example, they're not quite as inbred as people from Canvey Island.
I mean, that counts for something, right?

I must admit that a lot of people who I know from Leigh can be quite scathing about Southend which then gives them an air of superiority, although us Southenders can smirk at their house prices tumbling as Easyjet fly over.

To Saxonpride - First the name you use is an insult to the very heritage of any true Saxon. Obviously your small mind is eaten up with hatred born of jealousy. You are a true inverted snob.
Old Leigh is a wonderful example of the English heritage that is these days far too rare and we are all too quickly losing.
We visit Leigh two or three times a week and love the place and would live there if it were possible for us, we are not snobs, we are not rich, we live soley on a state pension.
The only part of Leigh that should be bulldozed is that horrible ugly Boatyard that is an eyesore and unfitting to the surroundings.
The Peterboat owners are displaying the too often modern trend for greed and power. We sincerly hope their plan fails and true lovers of English hetritage will boycot this establishment.
LONG LIVE OLD LEIGH AND ITS MEMORIES.

The memories of old Leigh could fill a thimble. It's a worthless place.
But I'm glad you can at least concede that the boatyard is a putrid eyesore and should be demolished.

smug

Having or showing an excessive pride in oneself or one's achievements.
Synonyms
self-satisfied - complacent - conceited

looks like you have described yourself rather aptly..so you have "achieved" living in southend and the only thing you have going for you, living in southend is that you feel conceited...great i am really happy for you. but dont feel too pleased with yourself from what i read in the local rag soon southend (as the cheapest area to live in the borough) will soon be inundated with DSS claimants overspill from London and i would rather live in leigh with a couple of planes flying overhead than have to deal with the influx of DSS claimants who will strain the already stretched school and health service in the locality....

As i said i have nothing against the majority of people who live in southend or the place, people have to live somewhere i choose to live in leigh and i do not judge or criticise others for where they choose to live.. but it seems that you do and that is a definition of a snob. You give the good hard working people of Southend a bad name, but it really doesn't surprise me as clearly you lack intellect .....
