10,000 join campaign to save Southend Airshow
7:10am Tuesday 19th February 2013 in News By David Trayner
Thomas Curtis and John Delaney, whose Facebook page Save Southend Airshow now has more than 10,000 'likes'
MORE than 10,000 people have joined a campaign to save Southend Airshow.
A Facebook page called Save Southend Airshow, set up after Southend Council announced plans to axe the event to save £130,000, now has more than 10,700 ‘likes’ and an e-petition against the cut has more than 1,100 signatures.
John Delaney, 52, of Eastwood, who set up the Facebook page with friend Thomas Curtis, 29 of Southend, said: "Over 10,000 people have joined the campaign to support saving the airshow in just a few weeks.
“This is a clear message to the council to rethink their decision and look to make cuts elsewhere where there is more wastage and substantially less benefit to the local community, the town and local traders."
Simon Wilson, 32, of Westcliff, who set up the e-petition, said: “It shows that people are in support of the airshow and the council are wrong cancelling it when they could cancel other things.
“It adds a lot of revenue to the town and it’s a part of Southend’s history.”
The council’s Tory cabinet approved scrapping the May bank Holiday crowd-puller last Tuesday, proposed as the council tries to fill a £10.4million black hole in its budget.
The full council will have the final say at the end of this month, but the leaders of the Liberal Democrat, Labour and Independent councillors also back the cut.

The airshow has always been a boring, tedious spectacle and I'm glad to see the back of it.

it only lines the pockets of the fast food stalls(from out of town),ice cream sellers(from out of town) and those lucky number games where you win a fluffy toy out the back of a big truck(from out of town)...ohh and a few inflatable slides(from out of town)...and some plastic kids toys and other varied market stall goods, its not about planes and flight anymore.

I LIKE elephants. This does not mean I want one roaming around in my grarden, trampling all over my rhubarb.
Liking a facebook page does not necessarily follow that these "likes" are in support of the page creator's campaign, but for the page itself. Maybe the likes are for the fact that the page exists for others to "like". Also, why have the number of facebook "likes" not translated to the same number of e-petition signees?
I rest my case.
I agree with 2shedsjackson. If these 10,000+ people feel that strongly then let them pay for it.

Southend should stick to kiss me quick hats and candy floss, followed by a brisk walk along the pier.

Get rid of this fiasco, you want an airshow, go to Duxford, Biggin Hill, or Farnborough.

Although I admire that people want to keep the airshow, this will never happen because the council now has to ask the airport permmision to cough, its not that the council that wanted to scrap the air show they were told to. The airport is now running southend and are also running scheduled flights, and have no intention of losssing a days scheduled flights due to a air display, easyjet and others are under contract to which any delays can result in hefty compensation claims under new ruling even if the flight is delayed , so what the petition is really saying in a round about way 10,000 fingers up to the airport , I do wonder if this is really the cloaked message.
As for penalties for delays, if enough notice is given then the airport and airlines can schedule accordingly. I watched at the airport for a while on the sunday last year, and it did not appear to make any difference to the schedules. The airport is not running to capacity, so there will be minimal disruption

It increases revenue for local pubs, guest houses, arcades and eateries. It also pulls in visitors from other towns and increases tourism in Southend. Instead of cancelling it, lets get it back to its best.
I LIKE the taste of beefburgers containing horse. This does not mean I agree to the manufacturers using horse meat in them.
